Malcolm Tspt

deffinately a “sorry boss” moment for 1 of their guys this morning

As I passed the A639 South emsall entry slip road onto the north bound A1 this morning.
1 of malcolm`s drivers drivers had lost his trailer right on the slip road while joining the A1, the trailer was nose down on the tarmac, and wombles had got lane 1 coned off

I went past southbound at 0600 and there were no wombles there then.

It did look a sorry sight with the nose on the floor.

How does that sort of thing happen? mechanical failure of the fifth wheel?

yes can be a failure on the fifth wheel or could be human error, years ago i worked with a firm that bought 4 new trucks with eurohitch fifth wheels which was later discoverd to have a fault with them, you would hitch up correctly and all would be good, then as your driving the fifth wheels jaws would suddenly release. the handle was fully in and dog clip in place. turned out to be the locking device under the fifth wheel to hold the jaws in locked position had a flaw in the metal and would snap releasing the jaws and letting the trailer go free, needless to say after 2 weeks in service the 4 new trucks were fitted with new jost fifth wheels which seen out the life of the trucks without incedent
