Making a comeback?

I drove for an agency for a little under 3 years from 2007-10 having got my class 1 license in the Army back in 2001. When our 2nd child came in early 2010 someone had to drop out of work to take care of the kids and, with work coming and going for me and the inconsistency of start times versus my wife’s steady 9-5 Mon-Fri job I drew the short straw.

So, with kiddie No 2 now firmly into his 1st year of primary school and me spending a lot of time kicking my heels I need to get earning again. As I was on my way out of driving they were bringing in CPC and looking into it now there seem to be quite a few more hurdles to getting back in than there were in the bad old days.

As i understand it I’ll need to do 35 hours CPC, do a medical(?), and get a new tacho card? If you friendly folk could confirm/disconfirm this, estimate the total cost to get me back to an employable state and offer any othe sage advice I’d be very grateful.

Many thanks in advance and good day to you.

How old are you now ?

You have a choice in regards to dcpc - either 35 hours attendance or do initial theory and practical tests but the second option has a few hoops to jump through before it can be done

You can get digicard now

Was there not an article in this months T&D about people who are returning to the industry where they only need to do a couple of parts of the CPC and get granted the full CPC!■■ Can’t quite remember off the top of my head and don’t have the magazine on me at the minute!!

Any more on this? I’m looking mostly to clarify if I need a medical and if I only have to do the 35 hours CPC?

CPC if you want to drive professionally, ie making money

Medical, ok until 45 unless someone corrects me

Just check the expiry date next to CE on the back of your photo card. That’s when you’ll need a medical.

CPC - I’d say take the 35 hours training similar cost to doing module 2 & 4 but quicker and an opportunity to brush up on things that may have changed since you last drove - like using a digital Tacho.

Thanks. I’ve used a digi tacho plenty but could do with a refresher anyway.
