Makes you wonder

Just how many are there out there just like this plying their trade up and down the roads on a daily basis? As an aside, I thought that Amazon recently publicly bleated about cleaning their act up? Clearly not when stuff needs delivering it appears.

I heard they were buying up haulage companies up to cover more of their own work is that true ?

No idea Dan. They do have their own haulage however, so surely it’d be more simple to merely buy/hire more tractor units?

Depends if they can get the o license I suppose.

A not so little bird told me they have tried several times to buy Hermes, but been refused.
My bet is that they will buy slam transport and maybe a couple more at some point and bring everything in house, as is their way.
Many subbies putting alot of eggs in an Amazon basket and it won’t end well

It’s the tip of an iceberg. We’ve clearly got a massive problem out there regarding unlicenced drivers.
The only bit that surprised me was that he’d even bothered with a provisional.
80 mph with a van.It might have been a good idea to check how many drops that he’d been allocated for the shift.

I dont get how Amazon can just bypass all laws and regulations just by using self employed contractors.
If a normal firm took on an employee without a licence they would be fined thousands.
It’s such an obvious loophole that needs closing.

Looks like assumptions being made here:
Is the van driver a direct Amazon contractor? Or an employee of a contractor? When we, who are employees, collect a load how often are our driving licences checked?
Aren’t contractors expected to supply their own replacement drivers if they are sick or on holiday?.
.
Do Amazon have an ‘O licence’ in the UK?
Under 3.5 vans won’t need one, of course, just wondering.

I’d say, without knowing all details, you’d be looking here at one or those “self employed contractor” types tbh

As far asi know Amazon don’t have any in house transport in the UK yet. In the US they have started that process though. They have their own trailer here but the units done out in Amazon colours are still subbies and apparently it entitles them to some uplift in some way, whether its on rated or preferential pick of work I’ve no idea.

The Amazon liveried units and vans you see are all on a franchise basis, hauliers/companies running in their colours for more work, the trucks are all leased. However, Amazon have been granted an o-licence at most of their yards now, most are for 15 trucks. vehicle-operator-licensing. … nce/548764

I genuinely dont know the company name. I’ll try and find put

But I have a friend in Bristol she rents her spare out on some website.
At the min she has a Romanian fella.staying he’s a nice enough bloke

This said Bristol haulage company I use the term.loosley. openly advertised in Bulgaria Romania etc for drivers to deliver Amazon parcels.
They come here promised a lot In reality they get nothing.like.promised.

He works amazon avonmouth via said company.
is classed as self.employed has to work shifts as told. Normally 10am finished
around 2100 4 days on 1 day off 4 on etc …collects avonmouth delivers around cardiff Payss a fee to said company for use of the van.plus fuel
His average pay is around £500 a week for 6 days a week out of.thay he has to pay for.his van then tax ni etc
Probably no holiday pay

But as he said in Romania he was a building site manager he was earning 1000 a month…
So he’s better off.money wise.

It’s all a bit merry-go-round Amazon.

This company is.obviosuly paid peanuts by amazon in return there obviously making.a profit then paying less to the drivers.

Not surprised there advertising abroad not many english people would would 6 days a week all.kind of shifts days and evethings for peanuts

Read the threads on here about how can i work extra shifts on here on a regular basis to know there plenty of nut cases who’d work 6 days a week, I doubt there’s many Romanian / Bulgarians posting on here so they’d be uk

Amazing how companies like Amazon like to be super woke and pro climate change and all the good stuff but when it comes to worker rights and regulations they dont give a crap.

Profits over people.

People want to pay as little as possible for the delivery hence this happens.
Very likely to be a subbie of a subbie hence no real checks done and earning peanuts.

Amazon/DPD/Hermes all pay the lowest they can.

At work we only use UPS or FedEx/TNT as they will normally cover the costs if kit goes missing.

You mean the Socialist utopia where they need suicide nets around the factories to keep staff turnover at manageable levels.

An unlicenced driver also means an uninsured driver. That includes hire and reward/Goods in Transit.
It is possible to re sub out the work but they make it clear that the contract is with the original contractor and if he zb’s up the job in any way they’ll claim against him.

Sub sub contract is what’s making the job unviable. They tender for maximum drops at a silly price per drop then look for which ever mug they can find to do it.

The home shopping scam is based on exploitation of front line delivery staff.
The rate per drop makes minimum wage irrelevant. If they say you can do 120 drops in 8 hours then that meets the minimum wage. :unamused:
