Did he not have one fitted?
What would you expect from a company with a name like that. Agro Merchants
Playing devils advocate from both sides. I’m imagine he knew what he was getting himself into. I’ve been treated badly by companies (as an agency driver). But it’s never gone further than me raising my voice slightly and telling them I’m going home. Once when I was abused on the phone for not doing the impossible. And once when I was told I’d have help to do a job which wasn’t safe alone - and I turned up to be told to take it or leave it. I just went home and got on with my life. I’ve also been expected to run bent a few times - when it’s suited me I have. When not I’ve dug my heels in and the company have sorted it out.
On the other hand. Someone shouldn’t be attacked at work. And if a manager attacked me a place of employment I’d certainly expect them to be sacked. Similarly, if I attacked a fellow employee I’d expect the sack. Which makes me think that he has a point.
The reality is that he is actually just making himself unemployable. He seems like trouble. He might win the battle but I doubt he will win the war.

I’m guessing you mean unload on break rather than produce a second drivers card or drive for 19 hours with a magnet glued to the tacho?

Didn’t the magnet go on the gearbox?

Goes on the sender apparently
He won’t work again for not wanting to get the job done fella. Obviously the manager was a Sawyer’s man and thought he was still there
Snowflake driver. Do it, run over your time then lamp the manager for giving you a ridiculous run. Shake hands then move on
" It is not for our planners to micro-manage the drivers - sometimes they have to think for themselves."
Not often you hear that!

Except in the case of this company that is exactly what they do and then wash their hands of it when it goes ■■■■ up they could save a fortune in phone calls if they didn’t continually ring to ask where you are, more phone calls for a few drops to the midlands than for a round trip to France

Exactly what it looks like.
The driver thought for himself, but the manager was second guessing him and got upset.
Good for the driver refusing, and good for him in taking this route.
His problem was that he backed out before he hit the 10 hours driving or the 15 hour limit . If he had worked right up to those limits then said I can’t do anymore he would have been covered. By backing out before his time was up he hasn’t a leg to stand on as he can’t now prove wether the work he was given could have been completed legaly or otherwise .

Maybe.
Or, tell the manager early on that the job isn`t possible, so he can try and look for alternatives?
Run right up to your hours and get screwed for parking safely? Not good planning.
The manager said "“It would have been very tight, but he would have just about made it. He was a professional driver who knew his time”. So why did he argue him then? Trust the professional driver.
It isnt clear from the report (to me anyway) whether he was booked onto a specific ferry for a particular reason? Was he coming up for a weekly rest maybe? Maybe...Start this run and only get home if you run bent? He did right to say no. Maybe....Here
s an awkward run, maybe a Saturday finish instead of Friday? He did wrong to say no.
If early in the week, start the run, night-out, and continue in the morning, no problem.
I dont have any experience of this company, so I
m just talking generally.
All you.do is tell the planner I might not be able to mange it all in the time I have left I’ll try my best.
Then you plod on then when your about an hour short of finishing you ring them up tell them.
As that way your not refusing to work covered your back.
And then leave them to.pick up the mess.
