Pay the man its a Leyland Super Hippo this one was originally powered by a left hand turbo engine but they weren’t the best so I fitted a 220 ■■■■■■■ ,it went well and thats the Missus driving me home from the Fitzroy Crossing Rodeo as the sergeant reckoned I was not in a fit state to drive, can’t understand why it was only a 3 day p…up/rodeo.lol
Cheers DIG
Good one mate,do you have a pic of the Hippo. What was the origanal motor a Leyland 690?

Best i can do Jamie they are the only 2 I have I think they were taken with one of those self developing cameras ,the old girl [truck] had a 220 ■■■■■■■ 13 speed R/R 24 ton Leyland hub reduction rear axles on a the leyland single point spring suspension and a KW bunk, the original engine was the 690 rear mounted turbo left hand model ,manifolds injector pump all on the drivers side of the block I only had knowledge of 2 of them here in West Aus and they both failed early the mid mounted turbo right hand [normal] engine was a good unit .
Cheers DiG
Thanks Dig,good looking old banga’. Did you do road trian work with it?
Interesting that you talk about the manifolds and pump on the right hand side of the motor,I’ve not heard of a 690 like this, they must have had different heads.
The bloke I work for has an LAD Hippo with a 690,I’ll ask him if he’s heard of them.
There were five of these Aussie assembled Super Hippo’s that came to NZ in the early 70’s,all with 690’s and 13 speeds. They were also fitted with the wider 24 ton hub reduction back ends, these are built proof, but then again the Leyland engines probably didn’t put out enough horse to couse trouble.
