aye , plodding on and bothering none chris . i’m an unpaid security guard for the next week , son and his wife off to spain for a week . he had a nearly new caravan nicked off his drive last time they went away . hopefully he’ll bring me some cheap ■■■■ back ( can’t/won’t kick the habit) , bit late now after 60 years . hope all is well with you and the family , cheers , dave
When I was on trunk for the BRS in the early 60’s I would be overtaken on the M1 by a couple of Hovis Leyland 8 wheel flour tankers which were flyers and somebody had worked on the pumps on these and I wish I could have gotten them to work on the Leyland 600 in the Bristol I was driving…Tony
Hi Tony,I am Ray Smyth,Ex Rank Hovis subby/owner driver. My experience of Leyland 600 engines,They were generally very good,
Late sixties I did 2 years driving buses and coaches for Ribble Motor Services here in the North West. The Leyland Leopard coaches
had 5 speed gearbox and high ratio diff, and would easily romp up to 80mph.
Regards, Ray Smyth.
Hy Ray, yes the Leyland 600 was a decent engine, although I prefered the AEC engines and lorrys, but these short wheel based W24 Octopuses were probably the fastest of their type I had come across and they sounded like they had been opened up, one trick with the Leyland was to put a pin hole in the venturi pipe but these had been properly opened up I should think, which was a surprise with a company like Hovis, now Sammy Andersons AEC’s well that was different…Tony
