Mainly Rank Hovis & Spillers Milling

FLOURPOWER:
Another one that ended up in Spillers control.

Yes, Wilson and King were two separate millers that amalgamated in the 1950s. Wilson of Liverpool and King of Ellesmere Port originally. When Spillers took over Wilson King, (mid-1980s IRC when I worked for Spillers), that business was in financial difficulties and the mill was in dire need of refurbishment. Dalgety Spillers (as it was) investesed in the mill and re-modelled it. Today it is owned by ADM Milliing and whilst it is a very old building the machinery inside is modern and it is a general purpose mill producing a wide range of flours. We work out of this mill daily and the bulk outloading bay is perfect for that eight-wheeler, but a challenge for an artic driver until they get used to it, having to reverse in from a tight blindside angle, and depending which bins you are under right up against a wall at the side and rear.

Im fairly sure that my mothers brother died in an accident whilst working for the spillers mill at silvertown in the 70"s :frowning: .i think the artic rolled away and he was trapped and suffocated against a wall, not sure if this was at silvertown or at a delivery somewere. His name was Freddy Fox,and im wondering if anyone remembers him or the incident

Hi Gingerfold, av got any Idea of the Origins of this old Flour Firm [Timmins]? Cheers Chris.

I’ve been trying to find out about Timmis and Tudor, but not much is coming to light. Timmis (or Timmins) is an old Shropshire name and there are refernces to a Timmins, a flour dealer from Shrewsbury dating back to the 1600s. In the early 1900s there were over 300 working flour mills in the country, now there are about 30 with a total annual output of flour of approximately 4.5 million tonnes.

Anyone remember RHM SPILLERS bakery in Blackburn on Preston New Rd it used to be Prests bakery,i worked there for about 9 months in early 1970s.they ran a fleet of mainly BMC FGs and a couple of BMC Mastiff tractor units and the odd AEC. I was a mechanic there but used to take the odd load of bread and cakes to Barrow in Furness and Maryport. Not a bad firm paid good money at the time, about £24-00 a week flat rate. They also ran about 20 Ford Transits trading under Merry Baker on home deliveries, very pioneering at the time, the biggest problem was the V4 petrol engine they had in them.Anyone got a pic of them? :unamused:

Yes, I remember Prests, it became a Spillers Wonderloaf bakery when the Prest family sold out. It closed when Spillers were forced to pull out of its bread making division because of unsustainable financial losses in 1978. The Prest family set up another bakery I believe and remained prominent in the Blackburn business community until very recently. There was something in the local Blackburn newspaper about one of the Prests just a few months ago.
