In the early 1970s it became more cost effective to ship containers of flour over to Northern Ireland. One such container seen leaving Beaufort Road Mill, Birkenhead. and second picture shows one being handled in Belfast.Cracking N.I.T. photos, thank you! There were some more taken of a Spillers tank, perhaps at Preston Dock, in the early 70s, and featuring an early Borderer. You don’t have copies of those, perchance?

Hi 240 Do u mean one like this? Cheers Chris. The very photo I had in mind!! Thank you very much - I had a copy of it from the local paper, but a poor quality print that was rather dog-eared after 40 years!

Rank Hovis Manchester Mill. Still the same site of the Hovis mill that was built in about 1906 and destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Manchester Blitz in WW2. Greenwoods Mill was next door and that also was acquired by Ranks. An underground conveyor system delivered imported wheat into both mills from the dockside grain silos (or elevator as it was called) in the years when Manchester Docks was a large and busy port. Hence the address of the Rank Hovis mill today, Elevator Road.

Roberts Bakery at Northwich was at one time partly owned by Hovis, after the formation of Rank Hovis McDougall in the early 1960s the exclusive flour supply arrangement that Hovis had with Roberts continued, and Rank Hovis is still the sole flour supplier to them now. What the ownership of Roberts is now I don’t know, but the Roberts family is still heavily involved. It has always been managed and run as an independent bakery.
