Highfield Haulage is my grandads buisness, Stephen is my dad. I stumbled cause this forum Purley by mistake. My grandad Fred passed away last week, and I was trying to get some pics for my nan. I’m overwhelmed by how many people my grandad and dad actually met. I’ve showed my dad (stephen) the thread and he’s not stopped laughing at some of the comments

hi all, anybody help with any photos of this company think they were from bradford area , uesd to see them in the 80s on the a1 going into london on a sunday afternoon heading for dover , cheers alan.
I worked for Transflash Macgregor in Bradford in the mid/late 80s straight from school, by even the early 80s any trailers with the name would have been subbies, their own account operation having ceased some time before
Some of the subbies would have been Mick Pollard from Trawden near Colne, Highfield Haulage aka The Wigan Mafia, Billy Jackson from Bradford, and Henry Long Transport from Manningham (stepframe tilts 4616W01 and 02, how sad am I?) and other non signwritten subbies included Bibby’s from their Yeadon depot, Martintrux, A-One Transport, Grange Seymour from Letchworth, and RES (Neil Maclelland) from Bradford
The man in charge of the Transflash operation was Ken Seabrook, old school and an absolute gentleman - some of his underlings left a lot to be desired though, even with hindsight! Happy days
Highfield Haulage aka The Wigan Mafia: can you remember the names of the two sons? They ended up not talking to each other. The tall one went in the workshop .I think? Old man was a short geezer.
Transflash had a driver named Kelly, good bloke.
Hi boys
Harry,Highfield haulage, The Wigan mafia, Run by Freddy and Jean Brown with sons Steve and ? can never remember his name.Fred emailed me a few months ago now running 3 Day space cabs on Swiss
Heres a photo taken in a services in the south of France 1977 Fred on the right with his truck as you said a small chap, and me on the left when I had hair
i worked for billy jackson in the early eighties out of transflash,in them days the job was good but hard,i can remember the wigan mafia starting on at transflash, the name wigan mafia came from a driver that did a couple off trips for them he came from eric hunwicks, they had green volvo’s,he did two trips and went back to hunwicks,i think he was affraid of the mafia’s thumb screws etc.
jj72 : Yes, Eric -good bloke. I got on with Steve OK as well.
vastly exp: I used to do a lot of work with Transflash for a Swiss outfit. Do you remember a Swiss/Scottish firm that used to day+night for them? the name escapes me
Hi boys
jj72 your to quick for me I was lying in bed and his name came to me but when I got up this morning you had allready been on . btw there was a girl as well. That photo I posted as I said was taken down south of France after tipping steel at Bonniville just this side of the Blonc and running to Montpelier to reload apples. The steel was from Bredbury Manchester through a firm called Arthur Armstrong brother to Robert Armstrong of the tankers. He had a office in the corn exchange Liverpool but soon after went bust on us We then went to work for a Swiss firm called Spedag who had a office in Whitworth st west Manchester running mostly Ceiby Gigy (spelling) Manchester Basel and return to Manchester.Anyone remember them? Sorry gone off on one
dessert driver : Is Fred Eric’s dad ? If so when he was doing Swiss he was a much smarter article. Immaculate & sharp as a tack. Fred in the snap looks kinda laid back & not as nervous …The height is right.

i think a one got a burn out f88 from transflash, could have been a p reg,and got a new cab fitted ,any one remember a fitter called peter powell
Hi boys
Harry, that is definitely Fred. We worked along side him for Irish Sea Ferries out of Garston dock, then we both went M.E. for Chapman and Ball.Fred only did one trip out there in a Daf 2200 things did not go well for him and it took him a long time. We did three trips ourselves then got the work from Armstrong.Steven was the eldest son then Eric.
We did regular Swiss for Spedag for 6 months 1978 I remember a Daf wag and drag in Spedag colours, would that have been Tony? We came across another chap Richard Briggs from Squiregate Blackpool. He was also doing the same run same pickup and drops every week but had not met up with him all that time.btw we brought his tilt and permits when he packed up in Jan 79.Anyone remember him he was married to a Swiss girl.
