Article in today’s Huddersfield Examiner says the Highways Agency is reviewing Scammonden Bridge considering increasing height of railings (currently just under 4 feet).
HA says neither plod, council or Samaritans have ever requested this.
That’s following another potential suicide there a few days ago, closed the motorway for a number of hours before being talked down.
It’s been like that for 46 years since it was built back in 1969 why change it now just for a few nut cases seeking attention.
The reason that the railings are only just under four feet is due to the strain the high winds in the vicinity would put on ones any higher.

We could do with that team on the motorways these days. I bet it wouldn’t take them 5+ years to build a " Smart" motorway
A friend suggested how these incidents could be resolved by sending a vet with a tranquilliser dart gun to immobilise the would-be jumper, much quicker than 7 hours persuasion by a police negotiator. (Not sure if he meant it!)
One Saturday afternoon a few years back a guy jumped off right in front of our vehicle. What a mess, and the effect it must have had on the folks in cars immediately if front that ran over it all must have been pretty bad. Whether higher railings would stop a determined nutter? I,m not sure.
