M62 J26-27

Latest update from the Yorkshire Post.

The driver of a heavy goods vehicle was cut free by firefighters after a crash involving two lorries on the M62.

The man was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

Drivers faced long delays after the crash between a tanker and heavy goods vehicle closed the motorway.

A 50 metre safety exclusion zone was imposed around the scene, causing the motorway to shut in both directions between junctions 26 and 27 following the collision at 12.40pm today (May 17) on the eastbound carriageway between the two junctions north of Birstall.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The road was shut to ensure public safety as the emergency services looked to free the driver of the tanker who was trapped. There were also flammable materials in the tanker.

Big thumbs up for the truckers, ruining another weekend for the masses :unamused:

Havent you got a bike to fall off ?

The accident, involving a lorry, a tanker and a third vehicle, occurred on the eastbound carriageway. Police also closed the westbound section just after lunchtime to allow an air ambulance to land. The driver of the tanker had to be freed from his cab with specialist equipment.

they have that arse first surely, the tanker cab looks undamaged

There is another pic that shows the front of the tanker damaged, not heavy damage mind.

Phantom Mark:
An empty tanker potentially is far more dangerous than a full tanker in many respects if I recall my ADR correctly, vapours being more dangerous than the fuel itself.

This is true. For example : You can’t set fire to diesel as a liquid, the vapour is what ignites above the liquid.

Yip. Passed my ADR this week and learned that its not the actual liquid that is flammable, but the vapours that they give off that are. Hence why an empty tanker can pose more of a risk as it contains more vapours than one full of fuel.

the actual liquid keeps a tanker fire cool enough to avoid an explosion…only trouble is,as the liquid burns off,the tanker gets hotter and hotter until it blows.

bleve…boiling liquid evaporating vapour explosion

Hiya… and under pressure…when i was at Jennings (good old days no elf and …)we on many
occasions needed to move the filler neck on the DIESEL tank… cap off the tank, cut chop and
make the correct shape, then gas weld the neck back on the 3/4 full tank. no problem’s.
never tried it with petrol tooooooo riskey.it was the done thing then. i must admit since
been a driver, i never knew about people putting petrol or paraffin into truck’s to stop the
diesel freezing years ago. thinking on i was quite lucky not to get a tank that had petrol
in just before i did the rerouteing of the filler.i did always have a quick sniff to check it
was diesel and look at the engine. the petrol ones was tank off and soldier the neck’s back on
much more trouble.

Mate of mine was sat a mile before junction 28,took him 4hours to get to ferrybridge. Lucky i was going in the other direction.

I left Rochdale at about 1pm having just done 4.30 drive and had my dinner. Sat nav said I’d be home by 2.45. Hit traffic coming down the hill to J25, got stuck in subsequent jam and diversion for four hours, and just made it to Whitwood on 4h 28m driving.
Had a 45 and went into my 10th hour, got back to yard at 7pm on 9h 40m driving. What a boring afternoon!
