M62 average speed cameras

I drive between Brighouse and Tingley on the M62 numerous times every day through the 50mph average speed cameras…And it never seizes to amaze me how many people (Car drivers) think that they’re dodging and tricking the cameras, either by slowing down to 50 when passing the cameras or changing lanes betweeen cameras…Now I’ve heard the myths of these average speed cameras many times off many people, but I’ve always been careful to stick to 50 when passing through, and thought these other drivers were idiots…But all these people who think that they’re dodging the cameras can’t be doing it for the first time…So how have they never got a ticket before? surely the myths can’t be true can they?

How would you know they didn’t get a ticket? There was something in the local paper a while back regarding how many drivers had been fined since the cameras were put up.I travel that way to work on a morning and if I’m around the 50mph mark it surprises me how many cars and some trucks come past at a fair rate of knots. ■■■■■■ me off more when you get some knob doing 35mph in second lane when the first lane is clear .

you get 10%+3mph I believe to allow for speedo inaccuracy,

The number of drivers caught by speed cameras on part of a motorway in West Yorkshire rose by more than 1,000% in 2011, figures from the West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership reveal.

About 11,000 drivers were caught by average speed cameras at major roadworks on the M62 in 2011, compared with just 1,000 in the previous year.

Roger Wantling from the Highways Agency said the rise was worrying.

He said speeding motorists were putting themselves and other at risk.

The cameras measure speed between two points to make sure drivers are not breaking the average speed limit.

No explanation

They are often set up at major roadworks where temporary speed limits are in place.

Mr Wantling said he could not explain the dramatic rise in the number of drivers ignoring the 50mph speed limit on the M62.

“The number does concern us. These cameras are purely for safety,” he said.

“From the Highways Agency’s point of view, we do not reduce speed limits unless we have to.”

Andrew Howard, head of road safety for the Automobile Association, said it was “very, very surprising” that so many drivers had flouted the law.

"The problem may be that people either get blase about them when they have been there for a long time if they feel they aren’t catching people.

“Or, of course, there may be something that means people just don’t think they are there at all,” he said.

Mr Wantling said the only way motorists would avoid having to pay a fine as a result of being caught on camera was to stick to the speed limit

11,000 over the year only averages out at just over 30 tickets a day…Which for me says it all, alot of people are finding ways round the cameras.

30 tickets an hour should be about right.

Which works out at 58mph…From what I’ve witnessed, alot of drivers do 65+ at least.

The amount of dawdling middle lane hoggers through these average cameras is a right pain in the arse.

How much longer are the ‘lighting works’ going to last? Doesnt look like they have done anything in the last month or so.

Next time you go through them, take a look at the markings on the road, and you will see a square in the centre of the lane, followed by 2 triangles at right angles literally a foot after them.

Friend of a friend got done recently, and they were at pain to describe that they measured his average speed between the 2 sets of markings!!! :open_mouth:

That must have been just the depth of his bumper. That is some accuracy.

And for what it’s worth, he was in his car at the time.

Ken.

I was surprised that some still don’t know what an average speed camera is.
My neighbour got a ticket last week for speeding through the area mentioned above, at 72 mph.
When I asked if he hadn’t seen the cameras/limit signs etc he told me " but there was no police about so I thought that the cameras were not switched on".

Depends what “speed” the camera is set at too.

if its set to 55 then you could get away with 59 / 60ish on your speedo.

I usually stick to 50 - 54 in the car and touch wood have not received a ticket yet.

What I can’t do with is
a) slow slow drivers 35 - 40 moh
b) loons doing well in excess of the speed and then braking / slowing down when a camera comes into view.

2013 according to the sign, has a month on it too, but can’t remember which month it was…

I stick to 50mph on sat nav, usually 50mph on the truck and car speedo too, since they’re both accurate, but had a truck the other day that was 53mph on speedo for 50mph on sat nav.

BUT, I’d be lucky to average 40mph through them because of a)

Possibly the cameras are set slightly higher so people might be getting away with about 60mph
also not sure how accuratly the cameras can read numberplates, there may be a few people who get lukcy if the camera missinterprates there number plate hence the avrage speed cant be mtached up also see allot of people these days with very dirty plates or plates that are partialy obscured by screws or fittings on tow bar brackets such as bike rack carriers or bumper guard plates, there may also be certain situations where from above the plate is not visable such as if the plate is recessed back, hence why not everyone gets a ticket

20.5 miles of continuous roadworks :frowning:

Seems to be going on forever ( and driving through it seems to take forever some days )

Winter 2013 and it cannot come soon enough.

I got overtaken going through the cameras by a real badass in a Jaguar the other night. I’m not a speed camera, but I reckon he was doing at least 150mph. I thought I’d been shot in the back of head when he came past me in lane two out of nowhere. He didn’t seem overly concerned about the cameras.

Is it possible to beat the system by going fast as ■■■■?

It’s worth bearing in mind when you see something like that, there’s a very real possibility that they’re crooks with false plates on!!

Like I said, a real badass.
