M60 Jcn 18 upgrade

Don’t hold your breath, Highways England are proposing to upgrade jcn18 of M60

Should of been done twenty years ago!!!

You can add your opinions on Highways England.

They compulsory purchased all the houses off thatchleach lane between j17 and j18 many years ago to do this and then changed their minds.
Plus they have been doing works on that section for years and have changed nothing.
Another 10 years maybe…

Although this section with traffic lights is the only break on the M60, it is still the only true orbital motorway in the UK I believe.
M25 has non motorway sections at the crossings

The M5-M6-M42 runs around Brum, with no interruptions.

My opinion - don’t bother. It works perfectly well at night. If people get stuck durkng the day, well they should switch to nightshift.

More serious impression. First one looks better but we know this will take months and cause major closures overnight for many of those months. Haven’t users and nearby residents of the M62 / M60 suffered enough from all the “upgrades” chaos round that area?

Why is it Highways England seem to be obsessed with that road.

They should spend some money on widening the lanes between worsley and the M61 going clock wise instead. They are a joke. Narrower then the road works where your reduced to 50mph.

It’s a fair point but doesn’t count as an orbital as its 3 separate motorways.

Fun fact…

Miles off topic. The M5/M6 link is the only m’way in the UK that doesn’t have a designated number; ie it’s not the M5 and it’s not the M6 it’s nothing.

No kidding! We are not usually down that section as we normally live on the M61 and M66 from Rochdale, but I came back from Chester last week and experienced the new road layout :open_mouth: . Not fun at all in a tall tractor unit where it’s harder to judge how close to the white lines you are. I was in lane 3 overtaking another wagon and even with my offside tyres grazing the white line to lane 4 I only just cleared his mirror with mine.

The changes at J18 are pointless. Why the loop on the M60 southbound? 80% of the traffic coming off there goes north on the M66 :unamused: . The traffic lights are a nuisance as the timing alters all the time. Some days you catch them all on green going M62 westbound onto M66 but it’s very rare. The cars all ignore the filter lanes as you enter as well. Lane 1 should filter into lane 3 and lane 2 should filter into lane 4 but you try holding your line as you get on the roundabout and they all cut across the front of you into lane 3 and beep at you because they think you’ve cut them up. :unamused:

there doing what they did at cathorpe . ie sliproad off the motorway round and back on instead of off and round a roundabout.
personally should of done that in the 1st place.when m60 was finshed years ago.

same as the new m56 m6 link road. been open 2/3 years maybe?.
now they have decide to dig it up start again. take sliproad north bound up and over onto the a556 meaning you dont que at the roundabout.
why they couldt do that in the 1st place.

there doing something similar on m6 near hiltonpark
and i feel maybe this will be the new norm now .
there more or less coming to an end of smart motorway . so now be a huge phase of junction redesigns now i reckon

One of reasons they want to do this is during peak times (pre-lockdown) drivers (off all types of vehicle) decide to proceed past a green light when there’s no where to go and block traffic when the lights change, ensuring grid lock ensues and traffic starts backing up the M60, M62 and M66 slip roads and on to the main carriageway.

Only problem for me is I’ll probably be retired (hopefully) when it’s finished in 2026!!!

This is after constant major roadworks on M60 & M62 since 2012, I’ve changed jobs twice and come to believe I’ll never travel a full day without going through a long stretch of 50mph motorway roadworks.

Main problem there is it says use both lanes for manchester…but they dont do they, I have gone round in lane 1 with numpties trying to get in lane 1 from 2 as pass second exit on roundabout because they think they are in wrong lane, if it was used as it should be the traffic flow would probably be ok. The funny thing is, you can usually fly up the slip road in lane 1 as all the numpties get in lane 2, millions of pounds of tax payers money to be spent because people dont read and act upon road signage.

Take it you mean m6 m556
I do excatly the same get in left lane bypass all.the traffic.
Yet always s get some idiot beeping at you thinking you’ve cut them.up.

The main problem at that junction is the traffic lights ate always failing out of order

Yes thats the junction i mean.

Oh great, 50mph average speed check back on the M60 again then :frowning:

Maybe they will bring the “smart” speed limit roadwork signs from the m62 that change from 50 to 40 now and then, just to keep it interesting

Problem with the M60 it’s a motorway designed by committee.
A patchwork of smaller motorways and roads that were never designed to be connected.
Hence the narrow lanes, sharp bends and dangerous junctions.
Fancy joining the motorway straight into lane 4 of 4 anyone…

If they’ve got some coin to burn they wanna put a off slip at jct 23 westbound on M62 at Huddersfield :unamused:

The new “Smart” speed limits in the roadworks on the M62, when I saw this as a press release from Highways England, it lead you to believe they would increase the average speed limit when they weren’t working on them, not drop the limit to 40 mph for 12 miles when they felt like it.

If the Highways Agency or whichever body is concerned with roadworks fancies a template on how roadworks can run efficiently then all they need to do is look at the M1 works between 15 and 13, since they raised the speed limit to 60mph the difference in traveling through the works has been staggering, for the better obviously.

The M60 is an absolute abortion of a motorway. Far far too many junctions that are too close together. It needs bypassing really. Long distance traffic from the M6 heading for the M62 East of Manchester needs to be diverted elsewhere.

I think there are plans to investigate and possibly implement this during the next road building phase.
