M60/62 from the M602 junction round to the M66 junction its been roadworks with average speed and narrow lanes for years. Only very recently been “complete”. Seeing as it was a rare occasion that it was all open overnight I drove back round that way this morning. So for the years of road works what’s actually been done?
On other projects round the country, once they are complete, whether you agree with a smart motorway working or not at the very least you get an extra lane, a much safer concrete central barrier, and a nice new road surface.
Ok I noticed a bit of resurfacing just after Barton bridge and at the M66 junction itself. But for the rest of it, if it’s had roadworks all this time but there’s no new barrier, no resurfaced lanes. It doesn’t take years to put up some gantries with variable speeds on.
So does anyone know what’s actually been done? What have we put up with years of road works for?
Basically just cameras, lots and lots of cameras ££££££
Made no improvements at all to the worst junctions especially joining M60 from the M602 where there is regularly a mile of stationary traffic queuing to join
I was talking to a driver in Oldham about this exact topic this week. It’s ridiculous that it has taken so long to do very little. He was telling me they are starting the other side soon, M66 down to stockport. I hope not but chances are they will for the money. The M62 from Warrington to the M60 is horrendous everyday now since they started work there and that will be going on for a couple of years.
In a word ■■■■ all. They added an extra lane at Rochdale end
Which was never that congested anyway…
I’m in Manchester work Trafford park. And it’s made no.difference at all.
The problem is where m60 joins m62 around there is to many junctions all.coming on together that causes the problems.
Harsh In a way but coming clock wise you go over barton bridge past junction 11 then the m62 from Liverpool joins . Then you have the exit to Worsley straight after it.
My view would be close that exit completely as that’s the problem cars wanting get over 3 lanes to exit cars coming from m62 stopping them .Just close the exitlet drivers use other ways.
Adoring more.lanes isn’t always the answer. There’s a saying sometime less is better
I work in Trafford Park and can also vouch for the fact they have done next to bugger all.
Same traffic jams in the same places at the same time every day. No extra lanes J18-J8, no improvement.
Don’t get me wrong, infrastructure work like improving the drainage etc. all worthwhile (although they didn’t bother with the central reservation J17-J15?) but the new smart motorway technology is a complete swindle. Unless you think getting slowed down to 40mph for no reason because somebody forgot to turn the sign off is progress. I’d argue the new signs are often creating traffic jams that wouldn’t be there otherwise.
Oh good so it’s not just me driving with my eyes closed then. For 2 years of roadworks and all the extra accidents that go with that, there’s no actual improvements to carriageway or barriers. Well done highways

To say they’ve been working on it for five years or so, not a lot. They only repainted the lines and resurfaced (yes, in that order) recently. Someone somewhere has had the governments pants down and got a load of money for nothing.
