i’m sure it will all become clear as she gets there.

thanks for all you’r replies

she’ll be going south,joining at , J11 and leaving at T2.
does she pay when she joins at J11. ? or when she leaves at T2 ?
or somewhere in between.

She will pay at the main toll between T4 and T3. It really isn’t difficult, a no brainer in fact. You get on the M6 Toll and drive until you have to stop because of a line of booths, with barriers, right across the carriageway.

Above each lane there will be a sign with a green arrow or a red cross, the ones with the arrows are open. Also on the sign, in one of the corners, there is a symbol that shows what is accepted at the booth and whether it is automatic or not. Bottom right will show a person and that means a manned booth, you can pay with cash or card here. Top left it shows a couple of credit cards, this means an unmanned booth that you use a card to pay at. All you do is slide your card into the slot, just as you would at an ATM, and a second or so later it spits your card back at you and the barrier lifts - off you go. If you want a receipt, you press the button marked Receipt before driving off.

Top right it will show coins going into an opening, this is an unmanned booth and you pay with correct change only, throw it in the opening and once it has the correct amount the barrier lifts and off you go, exact amount only - no change given.

If there is a ‘T’ sign in the bottom left this lane can be also used by TAG users.

Some of the lanes will have more than one symbol, giving you different options to pay in that lane.

Her best bet, if she is concerned, is to us one of the lanes with the person symbol in the bottom right corner and just hand over her card or the cash, you can get change at these booths.

There really is nothing to it, no different to paying to enter or exit a car park.

Whats wrong with getting on it and finding out . You know ,like an adventure .

problems.

i am trying to get her through the tolls with the least hassle.

Have you, or your daughter, ever used a car park where, when leaving, you drive to the exit and hand over some cash to a person in a little booth, or stick some coins in a machine so the barrier lifts and you drive out? It is no more complicated than that. Or have you ever used the Dartford/Severn/Humber crossing? That’s all it is.

There is only one way to go, there would be no need to hesitate or dither, although slowing down is a definite plus point. It makes paying easier if you slow down. I seriously doubt she will be the only car on there tomorrow, all she has to do is follow the vehicle in front.

To be honest I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Anyone who can drive, who can understand the meaning of red and green lights, who can understand basic road signs - i.e. Toll Plaza 1 Mile - who can pay for things in a shop or can use an ATM should be able to negotiate the paying of the toll without a problem. She can’t drive past without paying, unless she crashes the barrier. Whatever lane she finds herself in she will be able to pay by cash or card, either by handing it to a real live person, just like you do in a shop, or sticking it in a machine, just like an ATM.

To be frank, if anyone cannot grasp the simple task of paying a toll I would question whether they should be driving on a motorway at all.

its like any purchase enter selling area (toll Road) take goods (drive down road) go to checkout (peage toll booth) pay with something then leave

Only used this once in my Transit van.

Cost £7 and of course I drove into an unmanned booth with everyone up my backside. No change on me, ended up jumping the barrier for change and an argument with attendant I was in wrong lane.

Anyway threw the money in the machine and dropped a quid on the ground, ended up looking and feeling a right fool.

Advise anyone using it to take their time and choose the right booth.
When I left the toll road I ended up in a traffic jam for an hour, so any benefit was lost.

Went back a few times but never used it, expensive short cut.

If after all this information your daughter is still unsure, best thing is to come down the M6…

FPMSL … I just knew you wouldn’t keep it up, Coffee … great explanation though and very very patient. Ever thought of being a driving instructor??

Coffeholic is correct it should be no problem for everyday users.
We now have TAGS great no problems, for those who argue over the fee our company have calculated the time saved and the hassle free bypass of the M6 is worth it especially monday mornings and Friday afternoons. Only issue now is you join the ques now at junction 11 instead of 6.

IF U HAD STOPPED HERE .NO PROBLEM. IT S URE NEXT STATEMENT I TAKE ISSUE WITH.

well she is back ,safe and well.

point 1 there is not only one way to go, there is about 8 ways to go

point 2 there is a need to hesitate and dither till u sus out what the
signs mean,

point 3 she was not the only car there, had she followed the car in front (as u suggest)she would have found herself in a credit card only bay

point 4 can u tell me where i made a ‘mountain out of a molehill’

i asked 5 simple questions,

and your analogy of this is my daughter should not be driving on
a motorway at all.

(you dont know how to use the new self serve check outs at asda ,
so u should not be driving o a motorway.)

have a nice day

gingo .

peace and love ,and may your god go with you.
