I have wondered this for ages… Has anybody else noticed that the M6NB mid-late afternoon pretty much always slows & starts queuing just after Keele services, then miraculously clears just before you get to J16? It’s a complete mystery to me, anybody else have any idea what causes this?
Not really noticed that specific area Rob but J17 to J20 are invariably bloody awful day in, day out.

it’s all done to slow us down off the state!
then they can toll it ( all these smart motorways aren’t free you know )
then once the idiots who can’t use MK1 eyeballs
to look/ see there’s nowt in front, jam on brakes as hard as they can to 49 MPH to slow the country down!

Spot on, over the last 12 months the M6 between Keele and junction 20 have gone from bad to worse, 3 and a half hours yesterday to go from Junction 16 to 19 absolute joke.
It’s probably the hill up to the services. Truck in lane 1 slows down so truck 2 pulls out to overtake. Both die a death even though the overtaking truck has driven up said hill a thousand times. Audi driver approaching from behind at 90mph slams on down to 40mph and swerves into the outside lane which forces the BMW approaching at 90mph to slow down to 20mph. Before you know it the queue is a few mile down the road.
Goddam aliens
They took my wife
They took my job
They took Elvis
And now it seems in a front to conquer the hgv industry they are causing traffic.
Shockwave effect.
Collision at say 11am 19-20 North, tailbacks start. Let’s say 1 lane blocked for even just 10-15 mins for Police/Highways/Muppets to work out they need to move to H/S. (I accept its roadworks with free recovery at the moment)
Law of averages and studies say queues build at 1 mile a minute, but from experience this doesn’t account for traffic that is getting past.
So lets say it builds to a 3-4 mile block of traffic that’s not really moving.
Once the fronts moving its still filling at the back so the “block” moves backwards down the motorway. On average, from experience, about 30-45ins later it’s nearing 16, but 16 is a feeder junction for the cross country stuff from the A50/A500.
Main problem. Poor driving by car and van drivers. Usually it’s the trucks that avoid causing the problems, unless it’s goes really T*** up.
