Did you see the 25 mile long traffic jam and stationary traffic.A caravan had spun around and was facing the other way in the hard shoulder, when i went passed the HATO were setting up some straps to the front of the vehicle and a police car on blues and two`s hot to trot up the hard shoulder.
The jam was from Bristol to Thornbury, the traffic could pass so what was the delay, could not have been not just rubber neckers,it is human nature to look.Radio bulletins said one lane was out of action, no it was not.Wobbly box season cometh.
Not surprising, had several pass me yesterday going well over 60. One probably over 70. But it was being towed by a 4x4 so that’s OK as they’re so big and powerful (DOH)
I watched one flip over on the M1 a few weeks ago. Not pretty. Time for a 50mph limit. And no overtaking. Us evil truckers are looking like having to adhere to similar restrictions so why not caravans.
M5 is always busy on a Friday & wobbly box season is in full swing now, most cars just aren’t up to pulling them, the suspension must take a right battering.
Another point is they park the wobbly box up for a year, and do not check the condition of the tyres, or the air pressure, or add oil or grease to the moving parts on the suspension.
I saw a caravan lose a wheel on the motorway, it veered across all three lanes, and spun around, the car driver behind was in the live lane chasing the wheel as it was moving in to the traffic.
One way to control it is to issue O licences to caravan owners, the idea is a driving test with an examiner, then tea and biscuits with Beverly Bell if you make an mistake on the roads, she will take your Caravan O licence away, so no more Tenby or Butlins at Minehead for the kiddies.
Why do car drivers pull in to the truck parking at Michael Wood on the M5, they get annoyed when you are taking time to reverse in to a bay.Can they read.?
Was it not the case years ago that there was a speed restriction for towing caravans. Seem to remember was in the region of 50 mph. Have noticed more and more these days getting faster and faster. So not only the season for the accidents on the roads, but also how to jam up the parking in the services. Remember last year pulling into Blyth Services for a 45, struggling even to get in, only got a space cause a truck pulled out, then struggled to get out again. To coin an expression, happy days lol
I am sure there is a speed limit for towing caravans but its probably time the government should put some adverts on the TV. Possibly VOSA and the police should be looking at them more closely!
The UK Gov site states caravan speeds are. Built up areas 30mph, single carriageway 50mph, dual carriageway 60mph and motorway 60mph.

60mph. Meaning they’re going to be overtaking trucks all the time. I spoke to the driver of the one that flipped over a few weeks ago and he said it was all down to the draft caused by the truck. I thought the truck might have side swiped him or the caravan pulled in too early but he said it was no one’s fault.
I suppose at 50 you then have the problems of trucks blasting past the caravans but at least at 50mph you have a better chance of stopping if it starts snaking than if you’re doing 70 like what some of them are doing.
Problem is, lots of caravan owners are towing them on grandfather rights and have had no training whatsoever. My mate bought one a few years ago and drove it round illegally for nearly a year not realising he needed a B+E license as he passed after 1997
Summer must be on its way now the shed draggers are out in force?
We know the cars towing the wobblers are over weight. You can see how low the rear bumper of the car or van is with all the weught inside the wobbly box. They take enough kit for an around the world trip.Stick them on the weigh bridges and impound them untill the fine is psid.
saw one lying on it’s side A1 Colsterworth last tuesday…luckily for me on the other carriageway

I’ve never found trucks to be a problem overtaking me, when I’m towing my van as the speeds are roughly the same. The larger panel vans i.e, Transit or Sprinter, they do seem to ■■■■ you over towards them when they pass you at 70+. On a badly loaded outfit that could cause enough of a snake to give a driver a big problem.
For those who take a delight on seeing a caravan on it’s side, just remember that is a holiday ruined for them or their family. Whether it’s the drivers fault or not. I doubt very much you would like the contents of your cab strewn across a road being run over by the passing traffic.
I saw one on fire this time last year on the hard shoulder on the M20, geezer just standing there watching is holiday go up in flames, with all this crap whether you forget what season we are in.
so we must think that everybody pulling a caravan is a numpty… why… i have driven artics 40years + but have also pulled caravan all over europe so i dont see your way of thinking on this …seems there is some bad people driving trucks/some bad people pulling caravans …simples realy…

Caravan drivers with 40 years artic experience are not exactly standard. Many are just car drivers who have no experience or training of towing a trailer. At least truck drivers have had the training, even if many of them do forget it and drive round like idiots.
Some people are idiots, end of. At least in a truck they can only be an idiot at 56mph. In a caravan, well, the sky’s the limit.
Saw one go over a few years ago. He’d just got onto a dual carriageway, overtook a truck, and you could see the caravan snaking, driver did not alter his speed, and over it went. I remember from years and years ago when we used to go on caravan hols, my dad never parked in a truck park in services, always in the car park if he could, if not onto the next services…It really is a pain in the arse when you try to park in an MSA for a 45, and its full of caravans who take up one and a half spaces, and when you say anything, they just look at ya with that “■■■■ off” look. Blyth on Thursday was a good example. More vans in the truck park then anything else
The speed limit for all towing vehicles is 60 mph on the motorway, be it HGV or caravan or little ■■■■■ trailer.
Michael Wood is good for a laugh when they can not reverse. At first the passenger sits in the car seat then you know it gets serious when the wife has to get out to gesticulate her arm and hands to guide him in.
