M42 weight restriction for outside lane

That stretch of M42 north of Tamworth. What’s the point of the 3 mile weight restriction on the outside lane applying to anything over 7.5t when nearly all 7.5tonners are restricted anyway? Surely it should ban anything over 3.5t if the aim is to have a fast moving lane for the cars.

Better still do away with it all together as you just get a queue of hgvs at the end of the restriction overtaking each other causing a bottle neck.

Grrr.

Agreed…! Did 2 years night trunking from KingsBury to Notts, up and down there 3 or 4 times a shift
When it’s busy it doesn’t help at all. Think the restriction ends at 19.00 hours.

Does anyone take any notice though. I always stick to 50mph on duals including that part of the A42 and trucks just breeze past me. Ditto A14.

it was originaly put there as a trial the idea being if it worked it would be rolled out on other motorways

i think that section is on a slight uphill aswell

it is a long uphill drag, and it was originally put in place as a time/motion survey to see if it decreased journey times

after the trial period, it stayed in place

it is a valid point though about the overtaking at the end of it :unamused:

My main point was that 7.5tonners can use it and nearly all 7.5tonners are restricted.

i know that ALL of that section is not uphill, there are some flat sections, but, most of it is uphill for nearly 3 miles, dad

well just a little bit like Frankly Bank was back a few years… and when you got to the top a bit like a donkey derby down to junction 3…

When those “trials” first appeared years back on the M42 (and other roads), a friend of mine was pulled over by the police for overtaking there and threatened with prosecution and received a letter in the post etc. His then wife was a solicitor and she claimed that as it was only a trial they couldn’t do anything about trucks overtaking except waggle their finger and have a moan because it wasn’t actually law and to be so would require and act of parliament or something to that effect. She wrote an official looking letter to that effect to the police force of that area and nothing more was ever heard about it. He then proceeded, along with myself and others we know to continually overtake on that stretch of M42 and none of us were ever pulled for it. That would have been back in about 2007/8ish so things may have changed since then.
