m42 overtaking ban

went between 10 and 11 today the signs are awaiting the unwrapping on the 10th of Oct

I shall be going that way Monday morning about 07.30, it will be interesting to see what effect it has. The original proposal back in April or MAy this year was to also use the hard shoulder as lane 1, is that still the same or has it changed?

signs are only north bound unless i’ve not noticed em and say for three miles, what difference thats going to make i don’t know, strange thing is, i drive this road at different times virtually every day and that particular section is never that busy.

It held me up by about 2-3KPH over that section. Not the end of the world. Saying that though, it was around 10am so quite quiet. The proof in the pudding is going to be from 3pm-7pm.

Wasn’t the point of one of the previous topics on this was that the trucks are going to be nose-to-tail so even if anyone did want to move to the inside lane to leave the motorway, they’ll struggle… That’ll go down well with those car drivers!!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:   :unamused: :unamused:

They’ll just barge their way across anyway!!

I drove along there today and could see all the signs covered up. The ban only operates between 0700 and 1900. and is only on the northbound , up the hill between 10 & 11. It ends about a mile before junction 11.

Today the outside lane was running at 50 - 60 mph, behind a slow car!!!

it would actually be a very good stretch of road to make a training video on especially south bound in the morning, many times i’m on there approaching the m6 in the inside lane and the outside full of cars will be slow and speed up every few seconds yet the wagon in front of me might be five hundred yard away and we’ll do the whole stretch on the limiter! think if you could video some of these nutters who use the accelerator and brake in one second intervals they might realise how daft they’re driving is?

how many of you have been informed by your employer or trade assiociation of this taking force tomorrow

Did’nt you know being Clairevoyant was a pre-requisite for every Driver :open_mouth: :unamused:

had to smile today, entering said stretch, tanker i’d been following from the m6 decides it’s overtaking time and pulls out to pass brick wagon in front, brick wagon driver thinks “oh no you don’t” and they’re side by side for half a mile or more
wonder how many will deliberately do this, just to stick two fingers up at the planners?

cm yes i know that …do you know theres no dark side of the moon really

There’s an excellent album called Dark Side of the moon, that near enough for me

Came back up the M42 from Cardiff this evening, all trucks in lane one, all cars in lane two, lane one running fine, lane two one long queue of cars all bunched up, stop/go/stop/go, :unamused:

cm i apoligise …really theres no dark side of the moon …in fact its all dark (eclipse @ 1’ 33")

i want to know why the ban is flagged up in miles when the vehicles it affects
dont have milometers why does the ban end before the crest of the hill…why no publicity…and surely a capital T on the sign means imperial tonnes

No Wurries mate!!!

Don’t know
Don’t know and yes seems daft! :unamused:
It was publicised earlier in the year in the press
And Yes T is for imperial tons

The reason it is marked in miles is because miles are still the official unit of measurement of our roads. I think that if the signs are marked in km they would be illegal :open_mouth: :open_mouth: I seem to remember this when we had all the metrication fuss a few years ago. Doesn’t help the foreign drivers though, but then I suppose they wouldn’t get stopped anyway… (Cynic mode off…)

I think the ban stops before the top of the hill is to allow room for exiting traffic to get into lane long before - but we all know they only need 20 yards at the final marker board!!!

Not been up that way this week yet so I’ve not seen it in action. So far I’ve ping ponged between Telford and Desford.

Came up there yesterday, and a driver from Leicester Heavy Haulage, who had been following me for some time decided to pull out at the half-mile marker, doing about 0.2mph more than me - either he couldn`t tell the time, or he was trying to be the first one booked for the offence on that stretch :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

i might well have been behind you at the time, about 4.30 ish?
that might turn out to be the biggest prob, drivers know they’re coming up to that section so try and overtake as much as possible before they get there.

i emailed HA and their bloke has replied

"M42 lorry overtaking restriction only applies to lorries of 7.5 tonnes and over. It restricts lorries over 7.5 tonnes to the inside lane for 3 miles between Junctions 10 and 11 of the M42 between 7am and 7pm. I do not think it will have any significant effects or delays to lorries. This is a trial for a period of 18 months during which time we will monitor the effects. The lorry overtaking restriction is very clearly signed with two advance warning signs, a start sign, repeater signs every 500 metres and an end sign at the completion. I do not think that this trial needs to be given significant warnings using the motorway VMS (variable message signs) system. We hope that the trial will show that there is very little difference for lorries journey times.

All distances in the UK are measured in miles. All vehicles purchased in the UK should have speedometer and distances recorded in miles. However, as the restriction is comprehensively signed all lorry drivers will see where the start and end of the trial begins."

So as I drive vehicles UNDER 7.5t I can get in the OS lane then…

What about 7.5t vehicles with limiters?

How is that going to change anything?? Cars will still be stuck behind 7.5t’s in the OS lane that can’t pass 60… :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :unamused: :unamused:

By them Fuelprice will i not go faster then 48/50mph
So expect a lot of news in SAGA 105.7 or 106.6
They said,if it shows a good result it will be on most twoline Motorways in future
So,don’t expect that i will speeding just that after on most M’s are overtaking forbitten
For Pallex it’s good too,as i on junction to M1 have no Time for Coffee
