M4 -spirit of the eagle

Most likely Buzzards, if it’s got a forked tail then Red Kites.

Forked tails = Red Kite. We have them on our farm, 'kin huge and very impressive. If I remember correctly, back in the early 80’s it was only 200 pairs in the UK. They can now be seen all over the UK.
The best time to watch is early evening, the low sun makes them “glow” red.
When I get back I’ll find a picture for you

I panned a couple of screens in on the space of 3 months because of them catching more than they could chew (Mid flight fight) on the amber light TRUE :frowning:

Correct, apart from the apostrophe!

if you want a close up of these wonderful birds visit the café in stokenchurch off the M40 chris,s I think its called, he feeds then in the afternoon and they swoop down and collect it from the middle of the parking area. lots of photographers sneak around in the hedges trying to capture them on camera. cheap parking and good food, fills up early though.

Or stand in my mums front garden! She chucks loads of meat up on the extension and has had as many as 25 at any one time swooping down for the offerings.

The road between Stamford and Corby usually has four or more Kites patrolling.

The red kites are part of an introduction programme by supported by Defra. I worked for Defra for a while after the programme.

One of the most successful introduction programmes that have taken place. They had been persecuted to extinction in England. Motorway verges are great places for them as they are one of the few substantial areas that aren’t covered in pesticides and are left pretty much to their own devices so they become a reservoir for small mammals and rodents.

As to ‘they’ll starve when they run out of food’ it just shows the general ignorance. Predators are needed in the countryside to keep rodent and small mammal population under control and their own numbers will just balance.

Whilst I was in Defra a study was produce on the overall impact on the fox population. They analysed numbers and diet through stomach content and dropping. They came to the conclusion that Fox predation benefited farmers by around £5m per year as the main diet was small rodents (rats) and rabbits. Lamb take was measured as insignificant compared to other lamb losses.

Funnily enough they knew that the farmers would never accept it as there is this deep rooted desire to kill predators and raptors.

About 2 years ago I took a friend’s dog out for a longish walk on a nice day. We jumped in car and set off to nearby countryside near Spofforth. Finished nice walk and set off back to car. The dog ( cross whippet) suddenly bolted for the hedgerow and then got through it. I couldn’t see what the commotion was, so I had to also drag myself undignified through the hedges, which took a while! The dog had got hold of a rabbit ( but wasn’t savaging it yet!) I’m frantically trying to pull the dog away which I did. Rabbit gets away, I get myself brushed down from spikey hedgerow; happened to just look up and saw 2 red kites - did not think too much of it. Then another kite appeared, then another, then another all circling quite low above us. About 5 to 6 in all. It was quite spooky to watch and experience. I wonder if one had spotted the commotion below and that had attracted the others.

Found another pic of feeding time !

Pictures are simply amazing! Try to make one sit on your shoulder, some people can actually do this, anyway im suprised im not the only one looking at them great stuff

Not fricking likely…ya seen them talons!! :open_mouth:

Rhayader has plenty of Red Kites they get fed every afternoon.

Slightly off-topic, but i`ve seen quite a few VERY large murmurations of starlings recently. (word of the week perhaps?) A truly hypnotic sight - like a gigantic shoal of fish, only in the sky!!

Nice to see nature making a comeback after a few difficult years.

Saw some long tailed ■■■■ this morning - cute little things they are.

I saw some ■■■■ this morning. After 10 mins or so they had a long tail between them.

lmao. I DID think of you when typing that out, hoping you weren’t on line at that moment. Dam you, lol

I am well aware of my affliction lol.

I think I am too. If only I had put long tailed tilts…
