The Highways Agency is to widen 102 kilometres of the M25 by adding a lane in each direction. The widening is being carried out within the existing highway boundary.
The widening project has been divided into six sections, three of which have been identified for completion by July 2012. These sections are:
Section 1 Junctions 16 to 23
Section 4 Junctions 27 to 30
Section 6 Refurbishment of Hatfield Tunnel (A1M) This will be subject of a further report.

Construction of Section 1 is divided into 3 sub sections:

Section 1X Junction 16 to 18 April 2009 to June 2010 57 weeks
Section 1Y Junction 18 to 21 June 2010 to May 2011 48 weeks
Section 1Z Junction 21 to 23 May 2011 to June 2012 45 weeks

The work will be carried out by Connect Plus, which is a joint venture involving Balfour Beatty, Skanska, Atkins and Eagis.
Section 1X (Junctions 16 - 18) will commence on the night of the 27th April when during the first two weeks, a contraflow system will be installed over a distance of 8 kilometres.

One footbridge between junctions 17 and 18 will need to be removed and it has been proposed to close both carriageways between 17 and 18 on the night of Saturday 2nd May.
These works will undoubtedly cause severe congestion and delays. Anyone using the M25 on this section is advised to allow extra time for their journeys especially if they are going to Heathrow or Gatwick from the north.

An Operational Order will be issued at the end of March.

In case you thought "Ill go round the other way " the Section 4 works, junctions 27 to 30 start in July until June 2012. This is also a contraflow scheme.

Oh my god what idiot has authorised both to start together!!! :imp: :imp: :imp: Bad mood now.

Thats me ruinning down the A1 or M11 …Only puts an extra 10 mins or so on my journey…
Overnight that area I will lose a ■■■■ site more than 10 mins or so if it ends up being anything like those M1 works at Luton.
