M11 HGV overtaking ban will go ahead

I come down the M11 in morning rush hour on a regular basis. There’s far too much “Elephant Racing” going on among the trucks themselves. Foreign trucks don’t seem to know how to “drop a couple of clicks” on cruise, and tippers can only think with their “job ‘n’ knock” mentality it seems.

What’s the bloody hurry everyone? I’m nearing the end of my shift, but I don’t find the need to pull out for a slow overtake with the inevitable build-up of huffing and tutting drivers behind me!

I suggest that it’s “No overtaking for trucks AT ALL” during day shift hours, defined on the sign: 6am-8pm should do it.

Whats the hurry? Do you only do local work?
When ive 2000km to do its on the 100kph limiter all the way… sod ‘dropping a couple of clicks’…

100kph would be illegal in this country. 2000km would be aimed at a full working week, so I still don’t see the need to rush the nuts off the job. :sunglasses:

Never have I taken any notice of these…What are you supposed to do when you have no limiter?

:open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: …thatl just be the 2 of us on here then…

So what happens when you can plod along at 56, and you get stuck behind some stupid company, wincanton, maritime and stobarts that have trucks limited to 52mph

Or what happens when you are running empty and cruse up hills at 56, and you get stuck behind a tanker struggling to hold 35mph

What happens is, you take the lead off the loud pedal and get to where you’re going when you get there.

no doubt there will be cameras reading number plates, then the ticket will go through to the transport company.

Get a life people, it’ll be on “certain” stretches of the hilly parts of the M11, (which is a 2 lane motorway) to stop traffic build up. We are not talking 20 miles, 10 miles overtaking bans. Go drive in Germany and suffer, their no-overtaking bans go for miles and miles and miles and that’s on the flat !!

same as the A34,think that’s only a couple of miles on the hill section

Pehaps we need to back off the performance capability of modern lorries to a level more in line with the capability of the aimers. Knocking off the odd 200 horsepower should be enough along with getting rid of the devil’s invention…cruise control.

Cruise control saves fuel as your foot isnt up and down on the pedal to keep a steady speed. best invention ever. You can never have enough power, knock power ratings down 200hp and we’re back into the eighties.
My old F7 was a great truck but many gear changes needed at the then 38tonne, i wouldnt want it now…

  I was festooned with so much more power in My G290 Renault (gutless piece of :open_mouth: ) but no limiter, so wind it up and let it go until it was within about a mile of any slight undulation then your arm is moving quicker than a fiddlers elbow to get down those gears    and someone had the audacity to make it a twin steer for the concessions road tax, as if dragging 5 axles wasn’t hard enough for it to do :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Wow, that’s just wrong. As with every thing in this debate, its not the power or the technology, its the muppets who use it. If drivers learned that CC is an aid and not obligatory and used it appropriately then we wouldn’t be facing the overtaking bans :unamused:

Juddian:
Does cruise save fuel, coupled with an auto box its up and down the bloody gears and resumes full throttle to resume set speed.
.

I have the other side of it, Mine wont change gear, stays resolutely in 12th, and cant be overidden :unamused: :unamused:

That’s got to be a Daf fitted with Arsetronic

In Belgium we’ve had these overtaking bans for years. Pain in the ■■■ if you ask me.

If somebody is driving 85 k’s an hour & they’re in front of you then basically it’s tough cack on you if you want to drive 90…

Same for driving up a hill empty following a truck that’s fully loaded… Some people chance it. I have & been fined for it… :frowning: :frowning:

We have the 3 pedal models and they are also crippled by this eco crap.

Ah yes the good old G290 Renault cabbed version, you were lucky, i only had 224bhp. 16 speed box range change and splitter,i used every gear as was always fully loaded. I had the chassis stretched to 4m wheelbase to get under long pin tilts. Some of the long gradients in the hills in Spain used to see the poor girl struggling and i had ‘Lucky 7’ emblazoned on the visor  That little 6.7litre engine was always flat out but i never once had an issue with it…

A lack of power, no cruise control and a manual gearbox means that you actually have to concentrate on your driving to make progress, rather than just sitting there like a zombie while it is all done for you and suddenly waking up the the fact that the vehicle is front is going much slower than you are… or not as the case seems to be so often.

Yeah my previous 3 were the 3 pedal version, the last (13plate)was the best but mainly because when it arrived it was set for off road mode only, so had to have the road going setting put in, I badgered the fleet manager to have the power mode option put in, so it ended up with eco normal and power modes, plus could be driven manually aswell. Alas that went last year and this one arrived with only normal or eco setting :unamused: :unamused:

Brilliant

I have to say that the G290 driveline was mechanically very reliable, it was the electrics and the rapidly rotting cab that let its durability down. :unamused:

There’s section on the a34 like this.

It’s all well and good until you’ve got an HGV in lane 1 running at 44 tons crawling up at 30mph and your empty and your being told you can’t nip into lane 2 to fly past. Drivers just won’t keep to it unless they see a marked police car about.

Reckon that they’ll put ANPR cameras on the banned sections.

thatl be the answer…inside lane for the uk drivers, and outside lane for the taliban…would no doubt make more revenue just having a van parked at random as everyone will know if theres fixed cameras.

Talking of HGV overtaking bans, does anybody take any notice of the two mile stretch on the A14 that is a 7.5 tonne limit for lane 2?

Heading down to Peterborough today and there were just as many class 1 drivers in lane 2 as there were in lane 1. They did manage to shave around 60 seconds off their journey though. (Whilst further damaging truck drivers reputations).

Sad pricks.
