I know this subject has been done to death but if there is a Highways England bod on this forum, could he answer me a couple of questions.
When are you going to stop closing the M1 around Wakefield every flaming night? You have got 4 lanes to play with, surely you can leave 1 lane open. The upgrade was finished months ago.
What are you actually doing around the M18 split to have to bring a major junction down to 1 lane. 10 PM last night sat in stationary traffic.
The idea of a night trunk is to get goods from a to b with the minimum of hassle. The way its going at night it would be faster through the day.
As said before, the roads need repair but surely they can be a better way of managing these repairs.
Feel your pain, I love it going North when they shut the A1 from j50 so send you off at Dishforth up the A19 only to find that’s shut as well, add in Gateshead shut and a closure on the main diversion route round that one night just adds up to a fun nights work NOT.
Serious lack of planning/communication between those doing the works.
As a mere on road traffic officer, who has no say whatsoever over roadworks, we do wonder the logic behind some. In my area, we had M1 closed to work on gantrys. Even we were asking why 1 lane couldn’t run, then if need be switch over to hard shoulder running instead of a full closure? All I can say is it has nothing to do with the wombles out on the road.
The Wakefield section, which is about a mile from my house, keeps having to have remedial work done as it was done to a substandard condition originally. So says my mate who is a manager at Tarmac.
When they take you off at J40, and divert you through Wakefield, it goes right past my mates house and he is getting ■■■■■■ off with it and he is a driver!!!

Gateshead section opened last week or so now has 3 lanes not used it as have no need to
dozy:
All you’ve got too do is divert , it’s not as though it’s the end of the world is it
Yep but on the divert there is a divert then roadworks on that divert etc
If 1 is closed then please don’t close the divert so another divert occurs this is all we want now I understand sometimes there is a need to close a road but why close both the main roads at the same time same night leave 1 open not much to ask is it really can you imagine this happening during the day

It is when the diversion to the diversion is also closed and you have motorway traffic going down residential streets at 3 in the morning past peoples front doors.
And it’s not a one-off either, the A1 at Leeming bar has been shut nearly every weekday night for almost a year…and there’s still another year before the road’s finished!
