M1 minibus crash, first day in court

SHYTOT:
What is wrong with running 4.5 hours having a 45 minute break then running another 4.5 hours
why would an operator want to pay someone to hang about, make no wonder this industry is [zb]

Because there is no margin of error for things out of the drivers control roadworks diversions etc, If the last 5 miles are on A roads then chances are if it is tight the driver will be expected to break the speed limit, as a driver if you can’t see the stupidity of planning a run to 4 hours 30 then you’re in the wrong job.

Have noticed as well that since this incident some of the parcel companies limiters don’t seem to be as generous FedEx in particular

How bad can running Kent to Stoke be ?.

I did Feltham - Luton - Dewsbury and back regular every night with a gutless Merc which went backwards when it saw a hill and limited on the flat and still only ever needed a 45 minute break in the middle of the shift at Dewsbury involving around 4 hours + driving before a break. While taking more unnecessary breaks would have at best just made the shift longer than it needed to be thereby reducing my daily rest.Or at worse just run me into loads of morning rush hour traffic and out of driving time.

Also sure that train drivers regularly have to do 4 hour runs or more between breaks.

The idea that drivers can’t manage around 4 hours driving without losing the plot really is bs and a poor excuse for bad driving.

Is that why around Holyhead it’s Irish units pulling TNT & FedEx trailers as they will get the furthest from the port?

No he wont

After 4.5 hours driving take a break regardless of where you are

If I have this correct -
Numpty lorry driver over the drink limit driver stopped in lane 1 and numpty lorry driver behind was on the phone with cruise control on

If that is correct then it proves my points - no drink driving (already in law) + phone laws are wrong + cruise controls need changing so that they only work if the foot is on the accelerator apart from fully up or fully down

No he wont

But then he won’t get the run done in the allocated time which proves it is stupid to plan for it to be done in 4.5 hours and as others have said in previous posts questions will be asked as to why he stopped where he did, you and I know why he has stopped but the planner won’t as on paper the run could be done in 4.5 hours. As for the speeding, no planner will tell you to speed but then again will want to know why you were late

Like auto boxes do we really want trucks in the hands of ‘drivers’ who find it too difficult to apply the concentration needed to apply the manual accelerator input needed to maintain a regular speed. So we remove that requirement by allowing the use of cruise control then you obviously just shift that concentration deficit down the line to the point where the interface between eye and right foot is then just dumbed down completely. In which case your idea still leaves the flaw of having dumbed down the reaction of the change from throttle to brake input application.Realistically it’s time to ban both auto boxes and cruise control in trucks. While the stupidity of phone laws which ban hand held while legalising hands free use is even more ridiculous.

There is a 1 hour margin of error

Gaffers are not stupid if its a 4.5 hour run it should be done in 4.5 hours if there is a problem then run a 10

Fair one should have said it’s just the UK ones, try keeping up with the French ones around Paris they leave everybody behind.

And on the third night the driver does what?

if its an on going problem then it is not a 4.5 hour run

Christ Almighty.

No wonder the bloody jobs going to hell if we have people prepared to drive, at night especially, for 4 hrs 29 minutes and 59 bloody seconds non stop because some pointy shoe in a bloody office says that’s how its planned, and unbelievably some here think this is normal.

No wonder the sods are going along on the cruise with their eyes hanging out of their skulls and don’t see vehicles stationary in their lane, they have to use cruise because they must be that knackered they wouldn’t have the strength to hold the bloody throttle down.

Dunno about olympian athletes, some of these daft buggers should enter the extreme endurance events, mainly the one where they remove what’s left of your brain and fill your skull with bloody sawdust.

There isn’t anyway i’d be running that job in one hit, they could jump up and down and stamp their little paws and cry into their soup all they liked, they can stick their idiot planning where the sun doesn’t shine, there’s going to be one or possibly two proper stops for coffee and a ■■■■■ and a wash and freshen up, and thats both ways.

calm down if you cant do a days work without resting every few hours your in the wrong job

some drivers work nights so they can do things during day all but sleep like they should,
that’s why they can keep their eyes open

If you’re under that much pressure from your traffic office. Look for another job. One of the reasons I left a big company that took us over was because I had an hour and half left, they wanted me into Park Royal from Ely, tip and park up. Not doable I said. “Driver you have an hour and half left, get on with it!” I didn’t and a week later I found a new job.

a perfect summary of why the job has gone to the dogs, they’ve got you exactly where they want you, chasing your tail, have to work right up to the very last moment, or else.

why?

On my job i’ve never once been asked where i’ve been, why did it take me x number of hours, why did i take a certain route or any other banal ■■■■■■■■ from some box ticker behind a desk.

I take the correct unit and trailer, with the correct load and sealed correctly, deliver the load to the correct customer, put the load in the correct silo(s), there is no spillage or problem at the customer, the customer is happy, and last but not least brought the vehicle back all in one piece and its all clean and working correctly and there won’t be any complaints from members of the public who i’ve had to push along in case i get held up for a whole 2 seconds :unamused:

Thank the good Lord i’m not working in hire and reward if the idea of driving 4.5 hours in one hit is the new normal.
