Motorway traffic lights switch-on

The latest phase of a scheme designed to reduce congestion at Yorkshire’s busiest motorway junctions will start operating on Monday.
Traffic lights have been installed on M1 slip roads at junction 40 in Wakefield and junction 33 in Rotherham.

The sites mark the third phase of the project, which will see traffic signals put into operation at seven locations on the M1 and M62 in Yorkshire.

The £6m scheme is part of a national project to ease congestion.

Improve safety

The Highways Agency said the motorway access management scheme would improve safety on the region’s roads.

The signals work via sensors in the road surface which monitor the traffic flow.

The system has been operating since April 2006 on a number of sites on the M62 and M6 in the North West.

Good news they are desperately needed but they are also desperately needed at Stevenage in the mornings if they had them the flow would improve but as it is its a nightmare early morning.

They’ve just done this on the M62 in West Yorkshire. Seems to have improved things a little.

The y had them running last week, can’t remember if it was J38 or J40 but it didn’t seem to make any difference. The gap between the green lights wasn’t long enough so they were sending one batch down before the previous batch had cleared so it was the usual bun fight.

As I live, literally on top of J40,these,and other lights, are a rear end accident waiting to happen.

Some of the slip roads I’ve seen them installed at,are so short, someone will inevitably, come flying into the slip road, and there will be a queue just around the corner, and then BANG.
