Just out of interest, where did the diversion take you? I saw a long red line on google traffic so avoided it and came out at J30 and up to Sheffield, round the ring road, Tinsley and rejoined at Meadowhall, but that road from J30 to Sheffield is not a good one if you’re fully loaded! 
Could be worth a squint coming off at J29 and into Sheffield that way to come out via Meadowhall? Mostly dual carriageway, even through Chesterfield.
Its not that bad a diversion, just loads of roundabouts. The road is 50mph limit virtually all the way.

The default choice for me to avoid the carnage would have been the nuclear option of A46/A1/M62.Maybe I should have kept that quiet that’s zb’d that route up too.

They don’t come out when it’s raining. Except for resurfacing, of course, so that the rain guarantees a ■■■■ job and they can bill them again in 6 months time to come and re-do it. Rinse and repeat.
