M1 cheese lorry fire: Drivers facing delays near Crick

Lorry fire on M1 in Northamptonshire near Crick junction Max Earey tweeted: “Stuck at the fire for a while so got the Nikons out … Firefighters laying low (bottom right) to attack the flames”

Drivers are continuing to face delays on the M1 in Northamptonshire after a cheese lorry fire forced the closure of the carriageway overnight.

Eyewitnesses said there were “a couple of explosions” on the lorry before fire crews arrived, about 19:30 GMT on Monday.

About 18 firefighters attended the incident, at junction 18 near Crick. Nobody was injured.

The M1 is expected to remained closed until about 16:00.

Eyewitness Max Earey, driving from Crewe to Essex, said he was waiting on the carriageway for more than an hour.

“I could see something on fire in the distance but cars were still getting by - then a couple of lorries stopped to hold the traffic back as they could tell it might get a whole lot worse, which it did,” he said.

“There were a couple of explosions and then the emergency services turned up.”

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said "It was was an HGV carrying cheese which caught fire.

“We expect the road to remain closed until about 16:00 while the road is resurfaced with drivers expecting about 90 minute delays.”

Usual reason is a flat tyre overheating and catching fire.

Apetina or Castello.

They do milk for Arla and cheese from Cold Move at Oswestry, and probably other stuff too.

This would’ve been Cold Move, Oswestry to PCL, Hatfield cheese run that I’d done in the past
