Ltd company s/e insurance

what insurance policy are you required to have in place?
public liability any others eg drivers negligence??

Driver neg was invented by agencies to drop rates lower and get work were they would normally as they tell the company the drivers will pay for any minor damage through there specialist insurance. Its a load of bs and not reguired as that is why a companies have fleet insurance. Any where I’ve worked ive told them this and they cant supply an answer just say its a requirement. So when they are told I can insure a truck as I’m not an owner driver and don’t have an o licence. If they ask what if you rip a line off or smash a light then I tell I’ll get one and put it on my self then I get asked what if its a bigger accident. My reply is you have vehicle insurance dont you. I’m still waiting for a leyland company to ring me back regarding this. Rule is never work through agencies there nothing but vultures. Driving pay rates down.

Yes you should have public liability but it’s not a legal requirement

No such thing as driver neg insurance. I had several brokers trying to find a policy and the nearest anyone could get was taking out full on fully comp truck insurance for any vehicle.

thanks for the replies
so all I would need is public liability is that correct??

Conor is spot on. Bottom line is that as a s/e driver you don’t NEED any insurance, if you choose to take out insurance that’s entirely up to you, but you cannot be forced into taking it out.

I will add (as I always do in response to queries like this) that agencies have forced you to go down the limited company route so insurance wise you can use this as a stick to beat them with if you choose. You are a LIMITED company, that means LIMITED liability! If it goes Pete Tong you merely fold your company and walk away with no comeback whatsoever. Play them at their own game dude.

You COULD buy PLI but as stated its not needed.
It’s possible to get £5M PLI for around £80-£100, but I’d definately read the small print of any paperwork given to you to sign by the agency for their get out clauses to see what limits they put on their losses, as they’ll try to pass the buck for the balance of any claims to you

I’m self employed driver - have never had any form of insurance (PL, PI, Negligence etc) for my work - you don’t need it - you are covered by the Transport Co’s insurance just like an agency driver would be.

If an agency tries to push you into getting it, ask why you need it. If they refuse you work unless you get it, say you’ll be putting you rates up by £1 per hour to cover the additional costs.

So long as you have stated it in your terms of business

At which point you`ll hear down the phone the sound of someone falling off their chair, or someone bursting out laughing.
Which will probably be the last time you hear from them

You don’t even need to do that.

Thats the plan, they’re not worth working for
