Low bridges A38 Exeter - Plymouth

Couldn’t find any newer threads than this one and didn’t want to post a new one. So apologies for digging it up.

Why are these bridges not signposted. It’s not until you are on top of them and by then potentially too late.

I’ve been taking a 16ft1 decker to Plymouth all week and for the next 3 weeks. It amazes me that there have not been more bridge strikes and that the signage isn’t clearer.

All it would take is chevrons across the bridge pointing out the low left side.

the marker is there if you cant see it you need your eyes checked and there is a pre warning i’ll check it tonight. The 1st one is at the bottom of Holdon hill and the diversion was posted via Newton Abbott when they had the road up the next one is just past Trago mills I think… as its been said its where the 2 ft of hard shoulder is

There are 2 walkways as you approach Plymouth just after the train yard which are signed 16’ 0

Are there any dual carriageways with low bridges on ?.

I’ve never seen one and you’d think on a high speed road you’d be safe.

Could try this

Yes the markers are there. But not until you reach the bridge are they legible. Doing 50 up there with traffic on outside lane, so nowhere to escape, is a bit of a bummer if it’s your first time up there.

Sorry for digging up an old thread.

I do have a question about the bridge shown here, if the height restriction is on the hard shoulder only , I was wondering if a 16’3 trailer would be ok going under this bridge ?

Many Thanks

I’ve been under them with deckers and I didn’t hit them.

As long as your not in the marked area your fine

Thank you …

There are I think 2 bridges with height limits in the nearside lane (southbound)

the first is just past Chudleigh - I know this one (marked 15’9")

I’ve got a feeling there is another one, with an arc bridge? am I right? if so could someone give me a clue as to where it is?

Cheers

Yes there is at least one more but im afraid i dont know but its only really the left hand side of the inside lane as the bridges are at an angle. I’m sure someone will get it on google and post it.

Any ideas yet?

Are you thinking of the 15’ arched bridge after Plymouth on the way to Liskeard?

I don’t think he is, there are at least 2 bridges that are 15’ 9" I think between Exeter and Plymouth but It’s only in the left hand lane.

That 15’ 9" at Chudleigh isn’t the running lane; it’s the only the sort of hard shoulder bit under the bridge.

I’ve been along that stretch many times with a 16’ - no problems.
