Low bridge A49 Tarporley area

Came down A49 on Wed, making for A51 split, I noticed at the lights that the bridge on A49 heading down to Whitchurch, is now marked up at 14’ 3’‘, it was 15’ (as marked on my map) I’ve been under it a few times in the past with various trailers, I just thought it was a bit much lowering the height by 9’‘.
I know there is usually (or sometimes  ) something like a 3’’ tolerance to stop anybody winging it, but that still just takes it to an unofficial 14’ 6’.‘.
Do any locals know the score?
Is that the actual height or is it just a scam to deter the knob heads after a few strikes?.
I know Jenkinsons for instance use, or used to use, that road, regularly and some of their trailers are about 15’ or over.
Just curious for the future, has anybody been brave enough to blagg it with a much higher trailer and got under. .Cheers.

I’ve spoken to your Missus, she assures me that what you consider to be nine inches is in fact an awful lot less . Go for it

Many moons ago worked for Jack Richards and we used to take 15’ 3" trailers under it. Did they not renew the tarmac and then altered the bridge height?

I’ve got small hands.

^^^^ even Jeremy Beadle would struggle to make that look like a grown up one!

I am a bugs nadge above 14 ft 2 in but when approaching southbound the overheight vehicle sign flashes at me

Been under a few weeks ago at 14’9", from memory it got hit a few times and probably a lot of nimbys around that got it changed.
In my view it should be marked at its actual height and not what the local council wants.

Agreed, if certain drivers think some bridges are not correctly marked they may be tempted to give it a go, it has been already been a hit a few times since they changed the height.

Just remembering that being able to squeeze under it, if the vehicle is higher than the sign, then the offence is committed. Bound to be someone parked up nearby one day.

So what if the trailer is marked up higher than it actually is to make allowances for idiots?
I know my trailer heights when suspension is both up and down, because I measure it, but the height marker says different by about 2 to 3’h.
So if I know I can get under a bridge, which is already marked up lower than it actually is anyway, for the same reason as the trailer is marked up, if I’m noticed by some snouty copper, have I technically committed an offence do you reckon.
Surely if it went to court, it would be ultimately chucked out?
(Not really bothered to be honest, managed ok so far, but just curious.)

There are two sorts of height signs:
Triangular warning signs, giving advice of a height hazard ahead.
Circular prohibition signs, which are legally enforceable.

Doesn`t matter what height the bridge is, whether you hit it or not, if you go past a circular sign you are committing an offence. (Just like a circular speed limit sign. Having, or not having. an accident is irrelevant to a speeding offence)

The offence is to do with the actual height of the vehicle, not any markings a company puts on a trailer. If a trailer is marked lower than it`s actual height, it may some excuse I guess.

Such useful information just in case nobody was aware [emoji849][emoji1787][emoji1787]

On the subject of low bridges
I swear going across the Tyne bridge there are signs saying 14ft 3 obviously not though as I went sailing across in both directions in my 14ft 6 vehicle . Also thought 14ft 3 far to low for a main thoroughfare into Newcastle.

Thought it was 15’ 3"

Not been across it in a while, but isn’t it just the inside lane that’s 14ft 3? On the subject of Newcastle, isn’t there a height/width restriction or something on one of the lanes on the routes heading in (most likely A184 from the A1). I moved over away from that lane but never saw anything?

I used to go across the Tyne Bridge at 15’ 6" in lane two.
There is indeed a lower height for lane one.

A few years ago I got refused at the tyne tunnel south running at 15ft 11ins. was told by the security to use tyne bridge, no problem.
