Lovely old lorry

If someone offered me a new just unboxed Sed Ack 401 twin steer circa 84/85 design with the big ■■■■■■■ lurking under the bonnet i’d be happy as Larry, not for an hour but permanent.

Another one of my old motors Juddian, Seddon Atkinson 401, ok not a steer, but highly specced up for it’s era…late 80s.

Topliner super mega gigga trotter conversion
Home from home in cab spec, fridge microwave, tv video,.top range Blaupunkt stereo cassette deck with surround sound speakers, night heater,.you name it that motor had it…rare spec for it’s time.

290E ■■■■■■■■■■■ speed Fuller,.Rockwell axle,. twin Eminox stacks, all round good motor. :sunglasses:

Hell of a spec even for nowadays mate. Nice motor

I thought they were the best until I drove one , the old ones with an actual rad upfront looked the part and a Gardner engine sounded the part…the fake rad grill not so good and a 220 or 265 ?, rolls not so good until cyl head problem sorted ,they used to or some did crack where the inject poked through head good old uk

PS, Im with Sidevalve: Id love to play with an old Atki for an hour or two, but wouldn`t want to earn my living with one.

Taking a breath; Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company Roadways

Always associated with M6 junction 15 for me !

This was my first Lorry. It still exists. It has a proper radiator and an air suspension seat. Nowadays Agency drivers are sometimes called Limpers; going back to when Atkinsons were a regualr sight on the roads you could always recognise an Atkinson driver because he limped and stooped. Even for a driver of average height the wiper motor and the top of the windscreen was dead in line with his eyes so he had to peer under and around it. The steering column was to the left of his left leg so to reach the clutch pedal he had to sit askew in the seat and bend his leg around the steerin column. The brakes were lock actuators with the hand control valve on the rear wall of the cab besdie and behind the right hand. This was quite stiff to operate so as it was pushed down, or pulled up, so the air suspension seat either went up, or down, in sympathy. Although the Gardner engine meant slow or very slow progress at least it was quite a bit less noisy than the ■■■■■■■ or Rolls offerings.

The later mark 2 versions with a fake radiator had a noticeably larger cab with less visible woodwork, but this was offset by the propensity for the windscreen to fall out.

Same lorry a few years ago re-registered.

I came off an F10 before it with up to date technology, mine was 1974 reg, but with 50s to 60s tech.
I replaced it with a 2800 DAF it was like chalk and cheese.

Seen it a few times now mainly on the motorway and they also got a F12
