Lovell's Wharf

Buycrider:
Got some good memories of Lovells Wharf, Pete. (Except unless RobRoy   or one of his KTS team-mates, had nicked my parking place in that dead-end just outside the Out gate-- and I had to then make my way with no card in to that Industrial Estate about 2 mile along the A13).
I used to go in there with Burnholme Transport from Penrith --( Usually Green Volvo F86,s) up untill 1980…

Hey Buycrider you aint telling me Burnholmes (alias Fawlty Towers Trans) used to do dodgy running are ya, I really can,t believe that

High cockney pete , i no lovells wharf really well , my mum lives just of chriistchurch way , my step dad used to work for a company called james bradford that had there base in the late 80’s early 90’s , they used to run yellow MAN’s & leyland marathons , Also my dad used to drive for WBS form surrey wharf ( now known as surrey quays ) , about 1980 or 81 my dads truck was used to do a float for a carnival that had to go up deptford high street on a saturday afternoon in the middle of the saturday market , the float was decorated in the little side street oppersite the wall that had lovells wharf painted on it , it was a wedding theme for the majorettesgroup that used to go to the meridian sshool , Andy

I wish you,d stop referring to my old team in that derogatory manner R/R. The fact that we had the occasional mechanical setback, was blown out of all proportion.  As for running “bent”, AS IF !! :unamused: :unamused: Wash yer mouth out :stuck_out_tongue:

I was just thinking, when I saw your post, it will be about 12 years since I last saw our old mate Adrian “D/D” Sissons, in the booze place at Calais. Then got the bad news about him when I got back to base a week later. RIP Dan. :frowning: . Don,t time fly.

I used to go in there with Burnholme Transport from Penrith --( Usually Green Volvo F86,s) up untill 1980. Then with Dark Blue Scanny 111,s and 112,s for DK & JA Lee of Shap. ( are GHS842T or A56EAO in your book?)

I can,t find any pictures in my files at the minute. When/if I do, I,ll post them.

I used to love setting off out of there with a 4 to 6 foot overhang on my trailer, and an improvised marker board on the back. Which the lads in the yard had helped me to make. Especially getting round that “T” junction at the end of the street, and that “U” turn back on to the A13 ■■, when there were cars parked up all along the road.

The people in that yard were great. Always helpful and good for a laugh. Thanks for the memory Pete.

Thanks for the info, theres two firms that arent on my list, the book was years ago unfortunately,a source of major regret that i didnt keep it. I do remember a couple of firms from up that way though, D&M Cargill, F A Dayson, Millicans.

Does anyone remember loading at Lovell’s Wharf in Greenwich, im interested particularly in the 70’s to when the yard shut in 1989. Im looking for operators, fleet details and hopefully photos. I grew up next to the wharf and i used to stand by the gate taking down the details of the wagons that pulled up that day, over a hundred a day loading steel and aluminium mostly. The reason for asking is im halfway through a model of the wharf, i have a list of around 60 hauliers from memory but details and liveries are a bit sketchy. Thanks all.

I used to load there in early 80s, for KTS (blue 2800 flat trailer)loading for Scotch, sometimes wide loads which were a bit dodgy when coming out due to parked cars on the road out. :imp: I remember the old guy in despatch was called Charlie, a canny bloke that was always helpful, did you know him? and what happened to the site is it still there derelict, or been built on now?

KTS? KTransport Services by any chance? Green and red Daf 28s Atki 401s and cruiser cabbed Roadtrains if memory serves, with red F7s in Glynwed livery subbing. I remember a few of the people that worked there, i think i know the Charlie your talking about, his wife was the receptionist and used to baby sit for us. The yard is long gone now mate, Shaw Lovell operated till 1989, they tried to reopen the next year but where unsucessful due to the berth silting up and the high cost of dredging, Murray International took over for a few years making ree bar, the site sat empty then as with all the other wharves in London has been redeveloped as flats. I have some photos which i will post when i get the chance.

Im not sure about Seacons mate, the London Wharfingers where very competetive and hated loosing work to the other.

Then loads of others D H Armitage, Silks, Clugston, Stiller, Phil Jenkins i could go on but im probably boring you all now…

No Pete, K transport were based in the Midlands, the KTS I was with (Kirkbride Transport Services) were based near Carlisle ,two tone blue DAFs mostly, but at different times included a Spanish Dodge, an Iveco; Volvo, ERF, and an Atkinson Borderer, intending to put some photos on the ■■■■■■■■ haulage thread soon,(when I work out how to  ) so keep a look out if you,re interested.

Im now trying to trace the owner of 2 bright orange Ford D series 6 wheelers that where regulars in the 80s…

Pete, i have a scruffy little pre war book on London wharfs and docks that states Lovells Wharf in Pelton Rd Greenwich SE 10. Unfortunatly its not included in the few maps in the book does the address ring any bells
cheers
