Lorry stuck under bridge North East Wales

I was delivering to a Ceva depot near Wigan and was asked to reverse into the building, the guy said " will you fit under ok drive?" I replied “yes in metres, but not in feet” with a confused look on his face he said “huh?” I told him there was a difference in the two heights, this confused him even more and he replied “erm. We’ll tip you in the yard then”
I’ve just looked on street view and the height signs are no longer there

You really think a Google car has been through that area between the crash and you looking on street view?

I thought that too, was amazing he thought Streetview was some kind of live stream. I think he means the CEVA depot though.

Have you just woken up?

So they’ve got one bridge signed at 4.0m/13’3" and another signed at 4.1m/13’0". Can they not see that something is very wrong here? If measurements don’t convert to an exact figure like the bloke from the council says, would it not be more sensible to round down? Although in these cases I don’t think rounding off is the problem, it looks more like someone has been using a broken calculator! :unamused:

Yep, was thinking the same when I read that!

Reminds me of an overheard conversation between a coach drive and a tour guide in Switzlerland when a 2m width limit came into view. I was sitting in front row.
Driver: “I won’t fit through there, we need to turn left.”
Tour managers reaction was to pull out a calculator. (Driver sighs)
Driver “You can do maths until bedtime, I still won’t fit through!”.
Tour Manager “I know you are wider that 2m but I thought I’d convert it into feet and inches for you, Maybe it’s ok”.
Driver “I’ll save you the trouble, it’s about 6 foot 6. Won’t fit.”
Tour Manager “Actually it’s 6 ft 5 and 11 inches. Does that mean you fit?”
Driver (more quietly, with impressive restraint) : “Let’s do a deal. I’ll drive. You go back to talking BS on the microphone and stop talking BS to me”

I have just read on Comercial Motor website that Flintshire Council have admitted liability for the wrong heights being marked up on the signs. If I was the haulage company there would be a very big bill heading towards Flintshire Council and if I was the driver I would be seeking getting my money back from the fine.

What I would like to see is an apology by North Wales Police for tweeting that the driver was ‘pretty dense’…and a full refund of the fine too.

What a bunch of pompous gits.

Typical Old Bill though. They never do anything wrong or break the law  :unamused:

Is a Polish lorry. Is under 4m high. Sign says 4.1m Lorry driver correctly assumes he is good to go. Police who fined him are extracting the urine. Take it to court and watch the police and whoever is responsible for signing the bridge height get a right bollocking in court…

Police are taking the p1$$■■ How did you work that out?

Going on the available evidence, at the scene, plod can see a truck smacked up underneath a bridge, and it clearly looks as if the truck was too high. Plod are not going to start measuring up heights and converting units of measurement for an offence of careless driving. Yes, there is potential to appeal, given the conflicting height information, but that is not for plod to answer - that would be the council or highways.

The other option would have been to nick the driver, keep him in the cells overnight, and put him in front of the magistrate tomorrow morning. I’d take the ticket and appeal, personally.

From BBC News website:

Lorry stuck under bridge causes delays on A5104 and railway

A lorry stuck underneath Penyffordd railway bridge
The stuck lorry is having a knock-on effect on train services
Commuters are being warned to expect delays as a lorry is stuck under a bridge in Flintshire.
The A5104 is closed in both directions following the accident at Penyffordd railway bridge between the A550 at Penyffordd and A541 at Pontblyddyn.
There is currently no service on Arriva Trains Wales between Wrexham Central and Shotton.
Network Rail engineers are working to remove the lorry in order to inspect the bridge.
Arriva Trains Wales said four trains have been cancelled and other trains have been delayed, but bus replacement services are available.

The photos show the bridge signed at:

4.1m
13 '0 "

Is it me or does 4.1m not equate to 13’ 0"?

I don’t know if this would have any bearing on the drivers case, will trucknet csi please send their full report?

SD

This may seem pedantic (in which case, apologies) but I calculate 4.1 metres as 13’ 5.5".
