It’s a Target trailer which is actually owned by Swifts, probably an ex Swift driver who is now O/O so this explains a lot.
US box trailers have no chassis as you have in the UK, they depend on the structure of the whole van to provide the strength. Putting all the load in the middle of the van produces this break in the superstructure.

It is strange that in so many ways America is way ahead in technology & science terms but the standard of their automotive technology & manufacture is more than lacking compared with Europe.
