Can anyone tell me how this lorry got in this position? The simple answer would be that the gates closed around him. But look at the white marks I have put on the road, those catches are designed to stop the gates hitting traffic and locking them while the train goes past. As far as I can remember all level crossing gates opened from the inside to keep pedestrians off the railway tracks and to let train drivers know they had to stop.
Looks like some form of road block,as the double decker bus is slewed across the road.
But I’m probably totally wrong

We have been discussing this on a history forum, but it is not clear whether the bus driver has had enough and turning round (unlikely) or that the bus has had an accident and the lorry has just stopped in an unfortunate position. I think the trolleybuses were running in Hull in 1937 when it happened so it would be difficult to turn one around
I have searched the newspaper archives of the day but am no wiser.
As you said when the level crossings were open for traffic, the gates open inwards blocking the lines. Yet in this case the lorry is inside the gates. Very strange, but probably a simple explanation.
