No the one that sorted the men⌠Was the Juniper Berry
And the one one that sorted the boys was the Orange Tree
Cannot remember the name of the pub but spent a few nights at a place just off the M1 at Ampthill (think it was junction 11)
There was an old brickworks next door to the place - ideal for parking.
Great food and a cracking night.
Stonebeck just north of Penrith was a favourite with many drivers (Scottish and English) I can remember calling there as a school lad on the way back from Carlisle with an older friend from Kendal who drove for Wearing Bros. Flookburgh and they subbed for Robsons and we had loaded at Metal Box and as we werenât going to get back to the Victoria Tavern in Kendal before closing time on the Saturday afternoon it was Stonebeck! Those were the dayâs! Bewick.

The Stoneybeck Inn was at one time owned by a Mr Barnett who previously owned Barnett & Graham.
Here is another pub that is very popular with truckers and other weird and wonderful people. http://thesmugglersden.com/index.php

Think it was the Bedford arms? at j13 next to the brickworks, a few years ago I heard a driver giving directions, he told the other driver to come off the M1 at the chimmneys (j13) of course the chimmneys had gone 20 odd years previous ! I also stopped at the Brickmakers arms nr. Kempston .
The Juniper berry and the Southener in Southampton was usually an entertaining night!
I think I have mentioned it before, the little pub in Greenhithe. I was quite impressed that the barmaid would get her bits out for a pound. Sadly I have been spoiled and since those early days have met women who do it for much more, some do it for nothing but if experience has taught me anything, then it is this, âYou get what you pay for â

Anyone ever used the Red Lion, just off the M1 on the A45 near Northampton, or (I think it was) The White Lion at Sawtry on the A1 Peterborough by-pass?That latter pub started out on the west side of the A1, then they moved the road and it was on the east side, then they built the A1(M) over the top of it!
Great nights out in both. Happy memories.
Any other favourite night out pubs?

The Red Lion was popular in the early seventies because it was close to a large lay-by on the A45 that could take up to I.I.R.C. more than a dozen lorries and it was not far from the slip road of the M1. I was in there one night in the late seventies when a driver asked the landlord would he mind if he sold some raffle tickets for some charity that he was collecting for. The landlord said that he didnât mind but when he found out that the first prize was a 12 volt black and white portable t.v. he stopped the driver from selling anymore tickets and asked him to leave. He said that he was peeded off with blokes sat in their cab filling up the lay-by watching their teleâs and not using his pub .
Another couple of pubs that are well worth a mention are The Red Lion in Aldgate, The Montague Arms in New Cross, The Alveston Arms near Bristol and The Bungalow in Paisley
I remember the Red Lion from the early 80`s. They used to sell T-shirts and sweatshirts with an outline picture of the pub and the words âThe Red Lion,Truckers Retreatâ written on it.

Thanks Trev_H - that is the one.
It was next to a level crossing and if I recall the âbeer Gardenâ was decorated in those âawfulâ plastic wheel trims that fell off the cars that used to go over the lines too quickly.
Had a few happy nights there over the seats or in the back of my Leyland Roadrunner.
A little puddle jumper that had a 22 foot tautliner body on it !!!

By the sound of it âHâ you have defo been a âfrustrated theatrical/bit part actorâ what with appearing in an episode of the Sweeney (and getting shot) and then rubbing shoulders wiv Arfer Mullard (obviously trying to get a part in a âCarry on Filmâ) suggested titleââCarry on Down the Roadâ or âCarry on Trunkingâ.Your on about cockney âdrinkersâ I remember one night walking round to the Brown Bear and it was all boarded up apparently some Paddyâs had had a fall out a day or two before so some of them had come back in a van and backed up on the kerb and slung some fire bombs through the the windows! I gave it a wide berth after that and started going into the Long Bar on Aldgate.Cheers Dennis.
Do not take the âPâ Dennis, Harry is still not too good on his legs.
in London Dirty dicks has been mentioned before, Blind Beggar down in Bethnal.
There were quite a few pubs which also did digs usually B&B The Royal in Stockton, The Crawford Arms Crawford, The Rising Sun Old Kent Road and The Globe in Newport I will have some medication and see what others I can remember.

There was a story that the police woke up a bunch of drivers in that lay-by and breathalysed them in the middle of the night because they were in charge of their vehicles.
For a time after that, drivers used to hand in their keys to the landlord who would hang their ignition keys on hooks behind the bar. That way they couldnât be âin chargeâ of their vehicle.
The pub did breakfasts too, and then became a licensed cafe with a huge lorry park at the rear. Donât know if it is still operating, but I met the original landlord in a pub in Milton Malsor, near Rothersthorpe about ten years ago. Heâd been divorced and had to sell the Red Lion. He then bought that place as a quiet village pub. I think it was the Compass. I was moored near there in my boat. Also a place of quiet retirement!
