I left immingham at 04:30 and I’m pretty sure it was closed to high siders then!
It is true that there is now a tag system in operation, and you can bypass the booths using this method. However only a fool would ignore the signs and plod on regardless.
The A66 and woodhead pass aren’t monitored afaik when closed to high siders either. IF found that the driver ignored the signs, then they should throw the book at him, as he endangered himself and others!

Saw nothing on the martix signs. I also left at 04:30 from the docks.
We’ve got drivers saying it was open, drivers saying it was open when they left a, b, c , driver saying there mate crossed it 5 mins earlier and it was open , driver saying he saw no signs, bridge folks saying they need to investigate if it was open/ not but it’s really up to the driver , sounds like a right mess, I think the procedures clearly want looking at
To be fair to the driver, he said his tag worked and it wouldn’t be beyond the wit of man to stop his tag working if the bridge is closed. Sounds also like the bridge operator are covering there arses by saying that it’s the driver’s own responsibility to decide.
Don’tthink the driver is arguing he isn’t a high sided vechicle .he from I’ve read said he saw no signs prohibiting high sided vechicles, that’s why he crossed ( another driver said his mate crossed 5 mins earlier and there weren’t any warning signs .
The main thing he’s ok , would though be interesting to know what was the outcome of the investigation of the incident was

the tag doesn’t open the barrier, the tag lanes don’t have barriers, you don’t stop.
i do think it’s poor show from the bridge operator, they’re the ones with the wind monitoring equipment
I’ve had this discussion with tipper drivers they say there not classed as high siders but I always thought all wagons would be classed apart from flats and low loaders. I pull a glass trl which runs at 13.5 ft and I avoid areas which are closed but I know some people don’t there argument is there not high and there that low the wind can’t get under them like a conventional trl
As a rule of thumb if your wondering how to judge whether your vehicle is high or not just ask yourself if you where to jump off the top of it would it hurt.
If yes then your a high sider and for the high jump if breaking a route restriction.
Course if your good at the high jump then your judgement of a high sided vehicle may be greater than average in which case one must carryout calculations as to the mass of your vehicle using algebra and other types of magic.
Be sure to show all your working out.
Hope this simplifies things.
Although one can feel for the driver if caught between the bridge being OK to use then closed to highschool. Bit its a rock and a hard place scenario.
Not dissimilar to that realisation one gets when a woman screaming ‘No’ might actually mean no.
