I just got a new job which involves 2-3 nights out per week, now I’m new to this sleeping out, so was wondering what would you guys recommend as the best gear to have in my cab ?
I only have a rigid so space is tight so would it be best to just get a kettle and a gas stove ? If so what’s the best type to get ?
Now changing the subject slightly I did 2 nights out last week and parked up on an industrial estate good idea or not ? Are industrial estates good players especially to park up ?
Gas kettle and one of the flat gas cookers in a box they’re by far the most stable. You can also get camping pan sets that store inside each other.
Park wherever you feel safe, try to park up with an emptyish tank and consider getting one of those motion sensor alarms. Diesel and the load are all theives are after not anything in your cab. Worst happens; start it up and drive away
Edit: Go for sheets and duvet. Sleeping bags are minging.
Oh I have a sleeping bag in my cab at the moment as thought it’s easier to fold up and takes up less space. Thanks for the advice I will have a shop around
you wont go far wrong with the cartridge type cooker and a kettle.throw a saucepan in aswell, and keep a few tins of soup etc in stock.
as a rule,i dont cook but i keep dried pasta, tuna and those tubs of dolmio sauce on board...in case of emergency. I used a duvet for the first time this summer and can recommend this type of bedding..however Im tall and my feet stick out the end, which is no good now the nights are cooler as the cold strikes through the cab wall, directly onto my pinkies.
Im using an old 5 season sleeping bag atm that I used to use for fishing. ive also got a cheapo bag which packs up very small and is stored on the top bunk with my pillows.
both sleeping bags are washable.

Daft question but I take it your cab is a day cab and doesn’t have a dedicated bunk.
Have to agree with duvet option though, I had a bed set up like my one at home(albeit without the wife)- under sheet, duvet, fluffy pillow, hot water bottle (in case night heater packed up).

I would have thought more a rest cab, they cant ask you to night out regularly in a day cab can they??
I have a cartridge gas cooker, a whistiling kettle and a choice of tea or coffee. Most of my meals are the just add water variety so Oatso Simple for breakfast and a pot noodle type solution for dinner and Ill buy something more substantial for lunch when I stop for my break. If I am lucky enough to have to park at a service station the Ill eat well twice in a day and feel very happy!

Really have they put a Arsenal man city Chelsea or Liverpool one on there ? Dame that’s bad how can this site let that happen I want my utd one back some people just have no taste haha
So it’s decided I need duvet and a cartridge stove and kettle to go on stove as they more reliable ? Thanks people
Yes It is used in day by myself and sometimes like the otherday I will be asked to stay out. I was in Cheltenham with a empty box and they had a collection booked for 9:30am the next morning in Portsmouth so I had to stay out overnight as it works out a lot cheaper to pay me for doing that rather then me use loads of diesel to drive back to Felixstowe and back to Portsmouth.
It’s not ideal but I’m a lot happier in this job then my last one and my weekly pay is better.
Duvet: get a double duvet & cover, and fold it in two and sleep between the layers.
if your gonna get one of those flat cartridge gas stoves Id suggest getting a piece a 10-12mm plywood slightly larger than the stove footprint. Because if you end up using the stove on the cab floor between the seats, theres a slight chance if you`ve got a pot/kettle on the stove that heat can reflect downwards and melt the vinyl of the cab floor the plywood would help minimise the risk. I actually had my plywood covered in baking foil.
Another option for pot/kettle combo could be a billy can, the zebra head billy cans I have are ideal as they have an insert that can be used as a dish, fry pan, or as rice steamer while you boil stuff in the pot below see: ebay.co.uk/itm/ZEBRA-BILLY-C … 27d9238088
I have a couple of billy cans, and items stored inside them include a folding steamer so I can boil up some veg / fish and have a healthy option
You got a new job then obviously, hope it’s better money for you.
The only electric kettle I’d recommend is the waeco one. It’s pricey though so you may just want to get a gas stove to begin with & a camping kettle, I can’t be faffing about in the morning though, I switch the lecy one on ten mins before I get out of bed, hey presto.
I’ve got a campingaz bistro stove £12 on amazon.
Bring a couple of blankets as well as your bag or quilt!
Open your back doors if you’re empty as the slashers will ruin your curtains if you have a C/S.
Thanks again for the advice people very handy tips here for newbies to nights out.
Yes got a new job it’s container work on class 2 until I get my retest on class 1 then they will use me to cover class 1 drivers. Lorry is only a 55 plate but it’s pretty mint condition and I hear they are getting some new lorries soon including the rigid.
Money most will say isn’t massively better I’m getting only £40 per week more then my old job without nights out as a standard wage but add the nights out I can easily make my monthly wage £400ish more. In my old job it was 8am-5pm with no overtime and no Saturdays there was no option to earn more no money.
The new job yes is container work which most will say is boring but it’s a dame sight easier work then what I was doing before. So it’s swings and roundabouts but overall having a higher monthly wage sitting In my bank account is more important even if that means I have to work longer days then so be it.
