Lorry Drivers memories

I am not sure whether this has been posted recently, it hasn’t been updated for a while and there are some broken links, but it made me smile a bit today.

Hi Malc, thanks for bumping this up,not seen it for ages. Talk about bringing back memories, great stuff.

My memories were of an old Scammell highwayman no heater and a very vivid imagination for making your log sheets out at the end of the week so when it was handed in it was LEGAL which was quite an art as you usually had to decipher from about three each day. We also used to have a little competition to see who could find the strangest name as to book off at. a couple I used where California and Hollywood some times we even booked off where the wagon was actually parked.
Cheers Johnnie

Aye Sammie, like Bord Hill,Crowden,Dunford(near) and Saltersbrook on Woodhead. Then the Eatons, like Little,Long,Mark and Fields like Chester,Mangots,Hudders,Wednes,Shef (legal  ) and a host of other Fields,as well as Newports - Shropshire,East Yorks,South Wales.
Did you know that Kilburn was the centre of the Universe, like a force field,it included Swansea,Merthyr,Abergavenny,Monmouth,Ross,Worcester,Frankley Services,Birmingham (area),Burton and Derby as well as Four Ashes,Nottingham and t’Potteries.

Ah Log sheets, with no consecutive numbers unlike the later log books, start one when you start the day (just in case of an early pull by the wheeltappers) and if it was going to be a long day start another one a couple of hours later so you could get home or tipped or to the cafe with the stripper! Simple days. :sunglasses:

Chris we have both missed the best one FIDDLERS GREEN and this a real place on the A628 Woodhead Road and I know we both used hundreds if not thousands of times
Cheers Johnnie

It was quite difficult filling them in with straight lines on the steering wheel of a Bedford TK while driving when you saw a likely looking copper. Happy days??

You’d be amazed how many times I got from Bristol to Wolverhampton in an hour and a half, in a TK :open_mouth: . Wagons were much faster in those days, apparently…

Thanks for that link wheelnut, good reading.

Alot less traffic and not so many traffic lights i think you’;ll find park royal :wink wink:

I drove Bedford TK’s and KM’s,the TK was as easy as a car to drive.Only thing they were a low roof height and didn’t give enough headroom. As you say John they were fast once you got them rolling and a good little lorry to cut your teeth on.
Cheers Dave.

I remember myself and Hop Scotch taking 4 days to go from Rugby to Glasgow and back, stopping at Penrith on the way up and Carslise on the way down, even taking a final night out at BP Wolverhampton
Fed Ex thought we were amazing

Now I live here 700 miles a day is nothing, in fact I get slammed by other drivers for not driving NYC to St Albans VT and back without having 10 hours off en-route, a distance of 680 miles, this run takes me 2 days.
