Lorry driver having lost an eye loseing his hgv entitlemant

This is a serious request pls. I have a very good freind who is an owner driver ,and a good one at that.He has had an illness and because of this he has lost one eye.dvla have revoked his hgv license .He has managed to keep his company going by useing part time drivers, but is trying to get his own license back.has anybody here had anything similar happen to them or know of a solicitor who specialises in this feild.he has a solicitor at the moment but doesnt seem to be getting anywhere. He is about 50 yrs old and been driving about 28 yrs. thanks richmond

I should add he still haa his car and up to 7.5ton license and he has passed an eye test and has told dvla he is prepared to retake his test. No jokes pls this is a mans livlyhood and his life

about 20 yrs ago a driver I worked with lost an eye whilst erecting fencing for his daughters horse
he also lost his hgv licence and despite numerous solicitors and appeals he never had it restored but maybe it depends on how good your sight is in the other eye
good luck to your mate, sometimes life ■■■■■ :frowning:

Has he read the dvla medical rules book ?

dft.gov.uk/dvla/medical/~/me … lance.ashx

Having had a quick read, so stand to be corrected, but it looks like your mate is not going to get his licence back, their are numerous references to binocular vision and that being the minimum standard., my understanding of that is having two eyes

I think your mate unless he can unpick the fine print is going to have a hard time… sorry

Agree with the above, as I understand it, you do need to have both eyes functional to hold a licence.

Sadly as already been said your mate will no longer be able to drive an LGV.

You do need two eyes to gauge distance, otherwise God would have given animals one eye.

Okay , did the rules use to be differant because sure i have seem a trick drover with only the one eye before? Has anybody on here had anything similar ?

there is a guy from market drayton his dad owns a haulage firm and i was told by somebody who worked there he only had one eye the other was a false one :open_mouth: and he still drives artics i have seen him

I think there are three separate standards for eyesight, depending on when you took your test but all of them involve having sight in both eyes. I’m not being “negative”, I just understand that you need to have sight in both eyes to hold an HGV licence.

Many years ago [70,s ) i used to work with a guy called Frank ,he was a regular shunter for a company that ran a Glasgow Trunk and he used to del in Glasgow market he had one eye the other being a false one, cant help you with much with details regarding the licencing side but it shows that dispite his disability he was still driving ,working.

I have quickly read the dvla rules and at first look it seems you guys are right but then it has amendments two stars and three and they seem to contradict that rule. What we really need is someone who has has this recently

It seems to me that to drive an hgv you need 20/20 vision, or you are putting yourself and others at risk, as i see it your friend is probably going to have to give up on the big rigs, i also understand that it could be difficult for him after 28 years behind the wheel of one, maybe he can turn his hand to a new challenge though !

I worked with two blokes Ken Green & Joe Connely both had lost an eye each & both drove hgv untill they retired richmond, so I have to disagree Greeny gave his hgv up at 68 & I know Joe drove for James Soens well into his 60s, tell our friend not to give up.

He wont give up until he knows for sure trouble is dvla ate vague and tell him the rules will be changing again soon

I have a friend with only 1 eye who recently retired held an hgv untill then, about 10yrs. ago with the last lot of licence changes he had a problem renewing it, it all hinged on the fact that his eyesight was the same as when he originally applied for a licence, so depending on when your friend first applied for a licence and wether the fact that his sight has changed recently will affect his chances.

My freind has lost his eye since he took his test he lost it two yrs ago he took his test a
About tweny five yrs ago.

Your mate will have to sit back and have a think.
Is it really right to be driving a 44 ton truck with the use of just one eye?
I don’t like rules and regs, i’m dead against most of them, but i don’t think he should be driving a truck.

i got no central vision in my right eye only peripheral vision after an industrial accident some years ago i got banned in 2001 (speeding) and then had to take all licenses again 2004 when i got my license back. i’ve not had any problems and the dvla ddin’t stop me from taking my test or anything and they’ve not tried to revoke my license either.

hoping that your friend can get a result out of this dire situation.

one other point a really good friend uses prosthetics to walk and cos of that he can’t drive hgv despite the fact that he can use all the pedals…go figure…
