Wow - some great tips and points there - especially parking on the other side of the carriageway to look like travelling away from the port.
I will admit to being a bit freaked by the suggested need to tackle people with weapons on a regular basis, especially as part of my questioning of this whole issue is because despite my ill chosen username, I am a female driver.

I will start a separate thread later about all my questions as they go beyond the migrant topic of this thread.

Thanks for answering me.

Ive got a reasonable supply of Narwhal tusks

As you say DD,guilty as hell.
Also as you say,if the UK authorities have messed up their extradition request, then surely any barrister worth their salt would blow holes in it.
You no doubt, are aware, living where you do,that NI citizens are entitled to a GB or an Irish or BOTH passports.
No doubt that either or both have been used previously to evade or circumnavigate various forms of justice.
History,bite,bum springs to mind,to generalise.

Driver extradition trial hears lorry drivers paid up to €1,000 per trafficked migrant

i wonder if dixon international will sue the guarda for portraying one of their trucks as the lead picture saying drivers were paid up to £1k per head for the illegals?

i dont think you can hold both passports though you can hold both citizenships.#
if he is irish by passport then he is on a pigs back to tell the uk to sod off.
obviously the irish catholic/proddy/irish/english will influence the amount of assistance the uk will get depending on whos pulling what strings, and with the barrister having a name like siobhan then its going to be struggle for the brits.
theres more chance of the belgies being embarrassed into asking for him to bail the uk out.

it dont take much to imagine what evidence was left by the preyious illegals in the

In another incident, following the collection of illegal migrants from a trailer by cars, there was an “operation” to clean the trailer before delivery of the consignment’s legitimate load. Mr Kennedy said the intended recipients of the legitimate consignment refused to accept the load due to signs that human beings had been in the trailer.

no doubt it wasnt a few empty packets of crisps and mre likely ■■■■ and crap all over the load.
extra salty apples anyone??

Latest update the driver who was arrested in Dublin has just had his request for extradition to the UK approved by a Dublin court and will now face 41 charges in the UK.

Another idea for carrying defensive ‘weapons’ are those that are not designed as such but can be used as so.
Small type fire extinguisher,.and those high pressure aerosols with polish…or with anything, just to spray into the face and eyes of the scrote who is trying to get into your cab.
As DD says, if you carry a baseball bat (as I do) make sure you have a ball in the cab. :bulb:

It was bad enough in Calais the last time I was over about 10 yrs ago,.(10 years this very month in fact ) , I really don’t think I could be arsed with all the ag these days.
As much as I miss Euro work,.I reckon I’ll stick with my Cornwall farms.

About ten years ago, I used to amble back and forth from the UK to Italy and Greece in a 5t Daily - one night I’m checking in to get on the train at this end and I got stopped for a search.

Middle aged bint found my extension for my breaker bar for the wheel nuts. It was about 1200mm long a smaller type of scaffolding tube, which was on the floor in front of the passenger seat.

Was told to put it in the back with the load, I kinda hinted it was non of her business, just part and parcel of the vehicles kit - that didn’t go down well and I was then told if I didn’t move it I wouldn’t be getting on the train.

So I gave in and then stopped round the corner and put it back where it was. No explanation given from the woman, just do it or else. She had a girl oppo who looked about seventeen and acted like she was eleven - a right pair.

the spies are all quiet recently.

oops.i just found out they were up fri 24th so mabey there will be another tasty snippet over the weekend…
news at tang, over and out.
i wonder if harrison will give in and go,or let the defence pick holes in the warrant again.
realistically he has committed no uk offence alleged or otherwise?
belgium has more reason for extradition, but as usual the uk will crusade for the underdogs with the taxpayer footing the bill once again.

All very low key on the news but 2 more arrests today on in uk one in germany

Yes Old Timer, I saw that on Al Jazeera, the plot thickens.

Might sometimes keep happenings away from the papers and news for now if a trial is in progress to reduce chance of the jury being influenced. I was on jury service couple of years ago and was ready with the remote to change channel/avert eyes if the trial came on but never saw anything about it in the paper or on TV till after the verdict.

There certainly are rules about what can and can’t be reported, but the blanket banning of factual reports on court proceedings are very rare.
We’ve still got the maxim that justice must be seen to be done. Hearings “In camera”, in a closed and secret room, are not common.

From The Evening Standard:

A third man has been charged with manslaughter over the deaths of 39 Vietnamese people found dead in a refrigerated lorry container in Essex. Gheorghe Nica, of Langdon Hills in Essex, was arrested at Frankfurt Airport in Germany on Wednesday, January 29, by German authorities and the National Crime Agency and appeared before magistrates in Chelmsford on Saturday, Essex police said.

The 43-year-old was subject to a European Arrest Warrant and he has been charged with 39 counts of manslaughter and one count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration. He will next appear at the Old Bailey on March 16

Lorry driver Maurice Robinson was charged last year with 39 counts of manslaughter.

Police said a 22-year-old man was also arrested in Northern Ireland on Sunday on suspicion of manslaughter and facilitating unlawful immigration. He remains in custody in Essex, the force added.

A fourth man, 23-year-old Eamonn Harrison, is due before Dublin’s High Court on Wednesday as part of efforts to extradite him from the Republic of Ireland. Harrison, from Mayobridge in Northern Ireland, faces 39 counts of manslaughter and charges of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and conspiracy to traffic people.

The spokesman also appealed for information about two similar haulage vehicle journeys made into Purfleet on Friday, October 11 and Friday, October 18, that police believe were also connected to people trafficking

“We believe that these people, or anyone who had knowledge of the journeys, has crucial information to assist our inquiry,” he said.

Harrison has just won an a court hearing in Dublin allowing him to appeal against his extradition to the UK so he’ll be going nowhere soon

paddy judge just covering his own bum and passing it upstairs again and let someone else wade through the mess.
looks like the appeal is for the bollox they made of the original warrant, and not because he can argue no crime committed in the uk?
if he makes it to the uk,itl be time enough to pick whether turkey or ham with his xmas dinner again.

Hopefully he is on remand at the moment and the appeal is not scheduled until at least six months time so when he is eventually found guilty he will have been in jail even longer.

I’d imagine if he was remanded then that portion will already apply to his sentence, so time started on remand counts as the start of his sentence.

It does, and since conditions in prison while on remand are better than those after conviction, it makes sense to be on remand for as long as possible.

he is in a irish prison.
being on remand makes no difference to conditions.
same cell,same food,same tuckshop,same yard,ect,ect.]
due to his death threats, then he will be on a protection wing though not solitary, just surrounded by others on protection for various reasons ranging from kiddy fiddlers, suicide sids, to grasses.
for harrison, the plus point is his family are only an hours drive up the road for family visits so for that reason alone he will want to be staying there as long as possible as its all time served and the longer he stays there the lesser importance and lesser sentence hiscase will become as the heat and media attention dies down a tad assuming he dont wriggle out of it in the uk as it remains to be seen if he has committed any offence there?
he has a top notch wee good catholic irish paddy girl as a barrister so they wont give him up easily if for no other reason that the brits want him never mind any criminal offence he may have committed.

.

Although as a remand prisoner he can have more visits than the 1 per week granted to convicted prisoners, plus a lot more outgoing letters etc. This is not as good as the “benefits” for remand prisoners in English prisons, but on balance I’d say having family close by and being allowed more visits would be worthwhile for his sanity, if nothing else.
