Lorries under police escort - M1- any ideas?

Hi all.

Was coming South on the M1, around midday on Wednesday, near j27, when I saw 2 rigid box lorries (slightly bigger than 7.5tonners), navy blue in colour and without any markings, were travelling North in lane 3, both were bumper to bumper and being escorted by 2 traffic cars and 2 motor cycle outreiders on blues and twos. The Police were clearing lanes 2 & 3 for them.

Any idea what it was  I thought maybe bomb disposal, but they normally have blue lights and are marked up, would say trucks were possibly around the 12t mark and displaying non-military plates.

Cheers

I find that hard to believe in a long boxed 12 tonner. Half a dozen blocks would have it gross out :exclamation: .

Not these I’m afraid.

The bullion lorries are armour plated dark blue like the old securiocor money lorries.

I saw the bullion lorries parked up at the Grantham services a couple of weeks ago they police disco’s parked either end of them with armed (long barrel rifle’s as opposed to mp5’s) standing outside the vehicle’s in the “ready” position.

This does puzzle me as they normally use the M1 and they dont stop for anything.

I can only assume one of the trucks must have broken down

I use to do some work for a company that used plain white curtain siders with tail lifts.
Inside the curtain was a steel box with coded locks, in the event of a breakdowns you were given an armed guard & when load & unloading took place, it did so inside a locked warehouse & you were escorted to a sealed restroom.
It must have been a very high value load to deserve this level of obvious protection.

Ive heard of loads of drugs getting escorted to be destroyed by police. Seen it myself and ive spoken to a driver who has driven one such load. Armed Police, Customs. Leave from the city centre and follow police ■■■■■■ in front, if Police car goes through red light, You follow. Dont stop

Must get such a sense of power driving one of them at speed with no regard to your tachograph! and EU rules! Either that or scary with the big tall guy sitting next to you with a shiny gun and his hand on the trigger!

Bumped into one of these convoys a few years ago at Newcastle services, stopped for fuel they were, hope the cashier didn’t decline their agency card, not with all them guns about

They were running up to Edinburgh, two or three times a week.

Sorry, Rob, but they are the bullion trucks!! You NEVER get in their way… not even you lol

Further to the comment about ‘the power of a Police ■■■■■■’ I have been in an escorted convoy… when Nelson Mandela was over here 2 years ago (in my chauffeuring days)… was great fun :O)))))))))))
We went down the A312 to get him to the VIP Lounge at Heathrow the wrong side!!! at 530 pm on a Friday!!! ( the 312 is a dual carriageway!! )
When you are in those convoys, the worst thing you can do is lose contact with the Police… they go potty if one of the cars gets “lost”. even the back up cars

When i worked for Securicor they had an arctic with a Police ■■■■■■ from Stranraer to Stevenage with a full load of would you believe phone cards!!!.

Doing recovery work a while back, I arrived at a duel carrige way slip road to discover a 4 - 5 mile traffic jam of stationary traffic.
I’m asked where I’m going & as it’s the accident which is causing the stoppage I’m escorted the wrong way down 2 duel carrige ways & the roundabout between 56mph the wrong way down a duel carrigeway… lovely.
Also when my eldest daughter was 2 days old we had to rush her back to hospital & I got stopped whilst following the ambulance. It must have been a quiet night as I got a full blues & twos ■■■■■■ through the city streets & red lights at speeds of up to 90mph.
A copper with a very big smile got out of his car & said something along the lines of you handled that like you were use to it, I’ve driven buses for… & tippers for… said I, a now laugthing cop then goes over to chat to the ambulance driver (who we beat to the hospital.)
