I have had a break from driving for about 10 years now for a couple of reasons. Partly to try out a new career and then due to my wife passing away (needed to be at home for the kids - both over 21 now, so big enough to look after themselves!).
I did 5 years as a driver and then another 5 as an Owner/driver. I was mainly involved in container work and CLV whisky work with the odd curtainsider (full loads - not multi-drop) thrown in. I know the company I used to work for (Gray Bros,Dumbarton) is now no more. Did some agency work for a couple of years after they closed down before deciding on a change of career.
Just wondered if anybody on here in the Glasgow area knows of any haulage company who do similar work. I’ve had a look at A&D logisitics and they appear to be a similar setup to what Grays had (minus the CLV whisky stuff). Would probably be looking to do weekend work to start with just to get back into it and then take it from there. I’d prefer to avoid agency work if possible, but I gather it’s not as bad as it used to be - or maybe it is? Would prefer to trunk and/or tramp rather than spend the day sitting in the queue of an RDC!
Agency work is what you make it. You’ve been an owner driver so you’ll be fine because you’re used to having to think on your feet and find things out for yourself. Just turn up, have a notepad with you and ask for the phone numbers for the traffic office and breakdown/tyre company if there’s any, get the keys and ask any drivers around if you need a quick tour of the wagon as they’ve changed a lot in the last 10 years in respect to digi tachos, auto boxes, not having real oil dipsticks etc.
