Just literally got back in the door from my first day driving anything bigger than a transit van.
Started off with a nice leusirly drive in my car from Cannock, down to willenhall to pickup my ride for the day. Get there and fill out all the usual paperwork agency drivers have to complete, get given a few tacho discs, and the keys and address of my first stop - Aston Birmingham to collect empty tins and tubes that are destined to end up in your local Morrisons supermarket , after they have been filled that is.
Popped my tacho in before i started my daily checks, as advised by Gibsla
(ty for the tip btw
). Everything seemed fine with the wagon, so i set off to find the yard ‘boss’ to ask where the fuel pump was. He was very understanding and showed me where it was, and even sorted the machine you put your key into to start pumping fuel, after it didnt pump any for some weird reason and wouldnt let me try again as i had an ‘invalid odo reading’
So now im fueled up, try to start the engine and low and behold… the starter motor starts grinding instead of engaging. try this a few more times and eventually i got it going (its an 06 reg). So off i drive , out the yard and off to Aston in Birmingham for my pickup.
Arrive at Aston, found the place easily enough. reverse the wagon onto the loading bay (wagon fitted with tail-lift so luckily its a side on loading bay
). Guy there gives me my consignment details, im driving a curtain sider, so forklift needed to load up , i go to try and open the curtain and couldnt figure out how to realese the ratchet roller bar. thankfully the guy loading me knew howto do it , and i now know for next time
now its open he loads me up with 5 pallets of empty tin cans and aluminium ‘Toothpaste’ tubes. Secured the load with the ratchet straps suspended from the rail above the cargo area (requires both curtains on curtain sider open i found out)
Now a drive down from Aston back upto the M5 then down to Bristol. Drive went nice all the way down, got to bristol and they only gone and changed the road layout from what my satnav knows lol. Find the place im tipping at after a while, and pull into their Goods Inwards area. Guy comes up and checks paperwork, and tells me to move to the Goods Out Bay. Move there and open curtains. unstrap load. he starts forking the pallets off. then his boss comes and says ‘oh we wanted that at site b, not here’ , so load the pallets back onto my wagon. secure the curtains again. then drive to the other side of the industrial estate to their other site.
Get there , park up and went inside. Met a Polish guy and told him i had 5 pallets to offload. he tells me to pull back onto the bay, to which i replied ‘wont fit mate, tail-lift needs come down to get in the back, you need take it off from the sides.’ so he goes and mumbles to his mates, then comes back ‘sorry , need you goto other site.’ so back in my wagon. drive back to see the guy i spoke to originally, who confirms that i was supposed to offload at ‘site b’ where the polish guy was, and there was a mis-understanding . blah blah blah.
Drive back across the estate for 2nd time now, reverse next to the loading doors, and they bing out the fork-lift to tip me. now by the time all this has been done, ive used up all my 4.5 hours so have to take a 45min in their yard.
After my break a nice drive back to the yard, to handin paperwork , get tacho copied etc. got back into my car and felt like a right prat when the car starts jerking all over the place from clutch and brake pedal use:) was used to the wagon too much i think
So thats my first day as a proffesional driver, loved every minute of it and chomping at the bit to get some more
