One Christmas eve (Friday 24th December 2004), I was last one back to our yard, and by the time I had washed the wagon, parked up, tied open the curtains (TM insisted to avoid them being slashed by crooks) it was just me and the TM left. We were just about to leave when an Eastern European (One of the old Russian countries) driver pulled into the yard with a full load of 26 pallets for us.
I offered to jump on a fork lift to tip him, and the TM went inside to open a dock. 30 minutes later he was tipped. He went outside the gate and parked up. We went home.
On Boxing day, I had volunteered to do a security shift on site. I got there and the driver was still parked up. Hour later, he got out, opened up the side locker and cooked a breakfast. Then brought me over a plate with some sausages and beans on. Sat with me having breakfast, then went to use the shower. He went off for a walk, and came back after a few hours, sat with me till I was relieved at 6pm.
On the 28th, I came in to do a couple of local runs. He was still on site. Still waiting for a back load. Still there on the 30th when I went in to do another run.
I did another security shift on the 2nd of Jan, and he was still parked up. But today, he dropped the trailer and went off to get supplies.
Monday 3rd, back to normal at the yard, and he was still there when I got back that evening at 6pm.
Finally leaving on the 4th while I was out.
11 day wait for a backload.
What is the longest you have had?
Personally, I’ve never had to deal with backloads (Overnight pallet freight) But how long have you had to wait?
And nobody offered the driver to take him home and cook some meals for him and wash his clothes.Or take him in a car for a pub meal?
I waited two weeks in Portugal as they only load exports back to the UK on Friday nights in Porto.
I sat on the beach at Lisbon and ysed a free shower at a camping site and did some cycling and use my bar bell weights to keep fit.
No phone call as they forgot i was there.
Went to the shopping mall where films are shown in English with Portuguese subtitles.
Another time was about 3 days in Belgium.
Then sent to France to load coffins.I imagined if i crashed and a full load of coffins all over the road.
Had a 24 break on the German/ Polish border near Dresden once whilst waiting for a backload. Ended up going to the German border with Austria near Munich.
5 days in Italy once in August. Did my head in. Regularly sit for a day or two in Europe waiting. Starting to think I’d be better off just doing UK work, at least Im kept busy then
Often would sit about for a day waiting for something, use to call up every couple of hours in the beginning, soon got bored lol.

Five days sat in Aosta Italy over the Easter truck ban.I went up the mountain to watch the snowboarders and skiing.Cable car to the summit. Then wonder around the Roman ruins in town.
Once I was taking a tanker load of whiskey to Germany got to Hull Sunday afternoon the boss who had seen me of missed giving me some paperwork only new on continental work not sure what was needed so missed the boat sent another driver next day with paperwork got Monday night boat went to tip in Germany and then washed tank out back to Belgium for a load of lard started to load Friday morning and the woman who owned the place said you are late so I will make you late we loaded about 3ton and she sat me there till Tuesday morning then loaded me. Said sorry give me £15 and off I went women eh
is waiting for a backload really that bad? I thought with iPads/laptops you could never really be bored. I’ve never worked for a company who’s bread and butter is solely transport so if I’m empty i just run back to the yard no matter where i am.
Waited12 days for a ferry, also drove from qatar to italy a few
Times for a backload, there not next door to each other !
Not a back load but…
Last year got sent up to Northern Noway with a low-loader for a pickup. When I arrived I was told that there had been a total c#ck up and the goods wouldn’t be ready for a week. (The load was a sort of ready-made and fully equipped porta-cabin for a major construction)
Parked up and was very kindly put up in a local hotel by the manufacturer/supplier.
Lovely hotel and they had no problem with me staying there for the month I eventually waited!
Tough life!
Never bothered me once I was on salaried Swiss companies. I was getting paid 12 months of the year , no matter what happened. ( English pirates with their trip money & flexible tube diesel apps…
