Longest day shift

What is the longest shift in hours you can work in a day say starting at 6.00am regardless of your driving hours,eg if you only drive for say 5 hours but spend a lot of time waiting for load and unload.
There is a small debate at work over this,I was led to believe that you cannot exceed a 15 hour shift, that was maxium regardless of how little drive time you have done. Thanks guys for reading and replies and advice most welcome.

If you start at 6 am then you MUST start the next REST period by 9 pm - if you have a reduced daily rest available so a 15 hours max shift

REGULATION (EC) No 561/2006

Article 8

  1. A driver shall take daily and weekly rest periods.

  2. Within each period of 24 hours after the end of the
previous daily rest period or weekly rest period a driver shall
have taken a new daily rest period.

If the portion of the daily rest period which falls within that
24 hour period is at least nine hours but less than 11 hours,
then the daily rest period in question shall be regarded as a
reduced daily rest period.

  1. A driver may have at most three reduced daily rest
periods between any two weekly rest periods.

It is for the current EU regs but can be different for AETR regs or the old regs which they are probably thinking of ?

Might be interesting to know where they are getting their info from…

In a word, yes.

In several more words, this is because you must have at least 9 hours rest in the 24h period that started at 6am when you started your shift, and so to do that the maximum shift you can do is 15h. If there is a period of at least 3 hours continuous break in the middle of that shift somewhere you can do this every working day (as you have met the requirements for a “split daily rest”), otherwise you can only do this three times between weekly rest periods as you are reducing your normal 11h daily rest by working over 13 hours. The remaining days between those weekly rest period you are limited to a 13h shift (to ensure you get 11h rest in) and therefore must finish by 7pm at the latest.
