Long Wave Radio DAF Euro 6

Has any one fitted a LW radio into a DAF euro 6 XF?? Local dealer seems vague about this.
Id like one fitted but am concerned that itll be unusable because of interference from truck telemetrics. If youre wondering, I want it so I can hear UK radio 4 in west europe. And yes I have used app in my phone but (apart from cost of roaming data) the G3 and G4 coverage is patchy. Sods Law dictates a cut out just before punch line of any jokes!

Maybe a DAB radio instead?

Why not try a multiband portable radio ?

Think maplins had 1 with AUX socket so you could use truck speakers .

These little ones work well and are less than £15

Thanks for answers.
Ive tried a portable and that suffers from loads of interference as soon as ignition key is turned. Might work better with an external antenna tho? I thought that DAB is broadcast on a local fm network and so UK output isnt able to be heard in europe? If Ive misunderstood this Ill willingly be corrected.
Thanks for suggestions tho. And my apologies for duplicating this thread, I`m trying to take down the other one… honest…

Used to listen to Talk Radio… 1053 / 1089 on medium wave years ago on nights, the squeal off the engine management system was torture. LW, like MW is amplitude modulation and prone to interferences like a magnet.

Connor should be along for some good advice on aerial filter or the likes…

Guess moderator has taken down duplicate. Ta.
Yep, MW, is just about accessible on new truck, but I miss my dose of John Humphries ripping into politicians in the morning. (In interest of political balance may I say Im equally prejudiced against em all).

Shhhhh… he can’t tell difference between signwave & squarewave :bulb:

I am most intrigued by your choice of “Long Wave”. When I lived overseas, the only way of listening to BBC was on Short Wave to the World Service. It sounds odd but short wave is used for really long distance transmissions.

The other alternative is to look at electrical suppression either using screening or via suppressors ( usually capacitors). The latter would need to be installed by experts and could be expensive. Screening the radio unit would be easier and cheaper and then you could couple it up to an aerial mounted on your trailer with a properly screened lead back to the radio. But it might still pick up interference from trucks running alongside you.

That aside, it does suggest the need for truck manufacturers to design in suppression for their engine management systems. If enough people ask for it they may well respond.

Did more research and found "On Monday 18 February 2008, the BBC World Service stopped analogue shortwave transmissions to Europe"

The only thing your goin’ to find proporgating at 1500metres Long Wave ( frequency spectrum ) will be Skippy the kangaroo on steroids

Sorry can’t comment on a E6 Daf but in my E5 radio 4 long wave is pretty much useless one the engine or running, certainly past say Brussels, Paris. But with the engine off and the ignition on its acceptable. Currently just on the way back from Barcelona and had some reception down there and am sat near Clermont Ferrand and have a pretty good reception so getting excited about catching up with the archers tomorrow morning with my weekend fry-up!

My previous 2006 DAF could receive R4 on 198m quite well all down west coast of France and patchy reception past Lyon. Wish I still had that truck. Had current 460 for a coupla months now and can say its easily the nastiest most hateful truck Ive ever had. And not just because of lack of R4 ! A list of my gripes would bore you all, and remind me Ive gotta deal with that heap of ..... NO ! Dont wanna even think about it.

Longwave should be good for near Europe as it is used for broadcasting the shipping forecast.
Shame about all the electronics naffing things up. As far as the 10 metre Ham band (and chip buttie) I just switch off when I get in a built up area.

I suppose you could always keep “failing” the lorry until the QRM (man made interference) gets sorted (wishful thinking)

You can download the iplayer thing on your phone and store the broadcasts in england, and listen to them late when abroad .

At least you got something to listen to.

I do this to dr karl on radio 5 , and any science or history from radio 4 .

Just needs a mental leap as everything is old , but much more interesting than the idiot rubbish played on fm .

And its free

Not a XF but all the Howdens Joinery DAF CF Euro 6s have the original double din ones removed and fitted with Blaupunkts with Bluetooth for hands free. Those radios have AM MW on them and there’s a few I get into which are tuned into BBC Radio Five Live on 909kHz and they work fine. Here in amateur radio land a handheld radio tuned into an AM MW station is what we use to find local sources of electrical interference.

I will however point out the caveat that you can have zero interference on one vehicle and loads on the next even though it was the next off the production line. I have a friend who fits 2 way radios to trucks. He phoned me the other day for ideas because a client at a tipper firm has bought half a dozen new ones, he’s fitted radio to them all and one of them has noise on receive from the engine like the spark plug noise you used to get from cars on AM.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, I am already playing some podcasts, audio books etc thro the fitted system. But, (fussy sod I am) I do want current news etc. Agree that the R4 science etc output is good and doesnt suffer from being a few days or even weeks old. The fitted system including truck sat-nav is a good sounding unit, but I really dont want high fidelity perfectly reproduced rubbish. Id rather have the Today programme live even if it is punctuated with a few pops n whistles. The AM on fitted system is only good for Medium wave, no Long wave, and only gets any sort of signal near the channel. (except stationary at night, when Im in a Routiers or sleeping).
If the projected fitment by the dealer doesnt work out I may try a diy fix. Thanks for suggestion about how to locate interference with a portable radio. I wont miss the sat-nav, telemetrics and tracking device if I have to disconnect `em, but my boss may have some input into the subject…Any jobs going out there??

To answer my own question, and hopefully be of use to any others: LW now fitted by local DAF shop. Its been neatly fitted in one of slots above the windscreen, above the tacho. Works fine with engine off, or running, with tracker and telematics operating. Reception OK in north France but havent been south yet to find range. Original factory radio and sat-nav still in position and working fine. Credit where it`s due, so well done to the fitters.

It’s a pig of a job to do as you have to change the Arial too dad in their wisdom put the Arial in the head lining so along with routing the wires in you have to find something metal to bolt it to as the roof is plastic . Then a dropper on both feeds to the radio . A suppressor should stop the telematics interfering
