Long distance here means travelling in trailers for hundreds of miles, then put on ships bound for the middle east where they’re slaughtered halal style… read bloody barbaric. I’m one of those that think live export shouldn’t be happening.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
+1 there.
ive been in and out of a few slaughterhouses and sometimes the beasts def know whats about to happen…pigs seem to be more switched on for some reason.
they can move them slaughtered easier after topping them locally and save a lot of inhumane practices.
theres always the bonus of being able to load them hanging on top of 20 ton of steel plate on the floor again…
Same here and you’re dead right about the pigs. One live export company here no longer operates after the treatment sheep got on board. Bloody hot going to middle eastern countries in their summer. Plenty died horrible deaths en route and the rest were slaughtered by having their throats slashed. It’s about time halal and kosher slaughter was banned altogether.
By the way, only 20 ton of steel… schoolgirls load.

According to the RSPCA 58% of UK meat is from animals that have been stunned AND is certified halal.
Edit to add.
Seems New Zealand export lamb going to major UK supermarkets is halal slaughtered? I haven’t looked derply into it, but there seems to be a lot of it around, and it may not have to be as cruel as some think.

Straight question.
If animals are going for slaughter, why export them live rather than as carcasses?
Isn’t there an advantage to only ship out the cuts that a market wants?
Slaughter and butcher the animal here, so it’s cuts can be sent to the markets wanting them? (Apparently different places pay more for different “bits” of animals?)
I’ve got a rotten signal here, so thanks in advance for answers.
A lot of the animals that are exported live from Ireland are for breeding and are used to set up herds in the countries that they go to, Turkey and North Africa are big markets for live cattle
I can see that animals exported on meat hooks in fridges wouldn’t be very frisky on arrival.
And I would think breeding stock would be well cared for en-route.
Is there really much/any long distance movement of animals for slaughter?

The only reason for long distance journeys in the UK is because abattoirs keep closing meaning the animal has to travel further, wasn’t that long ago that there were plenty of local abattoirs but red tape has made many unviable and so they’ve closed down.
The rules around live movements are a lot stricter than people think with enforced leerage breaks of 24 hours en route and vet inspections at the leerage most people I know who do it all come from a farming background and so have an understanding of animals. The drivers also have to have done certain courses and hold the correct certification before they can haul livestock, any livestock damaged en route results in most cases of a bill against the haulier or a large discount for the buyer so it is everyone’s interests to ensure that the livestock arrives healthy

We service several Halal sites and two that I’ve been to stun the animals before dispatching them. Non stunned killing isn’t as bad as some would like to have the masses believe anyway, once the throat is cut death is imminent. What’s cruel is a beast taking three blows to the head before it goes down, fighting for your life with holes in your head can’t be a great feeling.

There really should be a radical, less barbaric answer to abatoirs here and abroad…Maybe a mobile farm to farm set-up that slowly knocks them out rather than the hideous preamble they endure prior to the stun
Decompression chamber creates hypoxia leading to euphoric drunkeness followed by unconsciousness.Could make one that just seems like a spacious stable which the animal wouldn’t know any different to what it’s used to.Similar applies to human executions.Anything else can only question the motivation.

Yes indeed and we covered this some time ago, although i think a degree of barbarism/deterrence would be appropriate for the more hideous malfeasantries .Brady/Hindley,Sutcliffe et al; would warrant a more…interesting despatch i fancy.

For some offences the type of punishment isn’t much of a deterrent to criminals it seems. It’s the perceived chances of getting caught that deters them.
Longer prison sentences for theft won’t affect crime rates much. More Bobbies on the beat will.
More serious crimes like child murder? If we accept that these people are some form of nutter, are different forms of punishment going to affect their behaviours?

All well reasoned arguments for sure but for cathartic reasons alone i still think dangling on a rope may just hit the sweet spot of public vengeance alongside,‘pause for reflection’ before,oh i dunno,slow-poison someone for fiscal gain, taking a sawn-off to a robbery etc.Why should there be a humane option for that level of evil.Simplistic maybe but i’ll bet many a capital crime was thwarted during Pierepoints tenure.

I can understand the logic because we’re all human and have the revenge instinct. But at the end of the day if we don’t resist it by just doing the right thing then a piece of our own sanity then just then gets added to the crims victim list.IE don’t want to be driven into taking a phsycopathic view in answer to another. Having said that I didn’t view the end scene in Dirty Harry as fitting that description.
