Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

That Handyman photo must be recent as the building says global lollysticks

Remind me. What engine did those Scammel Handymans have in them ? Gardners ?

Fergie,

That Handyman shunter appears[with all the smoke in evidence]to have a Gardner fitted, although when Leyland took them over,I do believe they also fitted a Leyland engine as an option to the trusty[but smokey]Gardner.

Rgds to all,

David

We had some Handymen at Pickfords which had a Leyland 680 power plus in and at Sykes they had a 220 rolls in them, the early ones had a Scammell gate change box and the later models had the Thornycroft box the same as the ergo Beavers and Mandators which made them easier to drive as a few drivers were not to keen with the Scammell gate change gear box

cheers Johnnie

Richie, great pics as ever. I remember that pale blue ERF on roadways, I think Roger Nunn drove it? They had a couple of white and rainbow ones as well, maybe ex TML. Not sure, never been very good with the shipping lines but I remember driving a tiny Iveco unit on Pitters in (was it) Van Ommeron colours. They looked smart and only weighed about 5 tonne I think, it took me ages to get it up reigate hill at 32 tonne and the bunk was like a camp bed. You remember them?

HERES ONE OF THE TINY IVECOs 175.24 WOULD’NT PULL YOUR FORE … BACK(yours truly at the wheel)

HERES A IVECO 190.30 IN NYK COLOURS(bit better lorry)

Regards Rich

Cheers Rich,

I knew you’d know the one’s I meant, I forgot the model names/numbers. Yes a really underpowered unit but a real guv’nors motor, was it the same cab on the rigid’s at pitters? I quite liked the bigger ones, and I remember Tony Alford owned a nice Turbo Star with aircon which always made me jealous especially once running home with him in the summer after a night out in Sheffield where we loaded wire. What a pit Tinsley is.

Mike

Hi All
Mikey the rainbow ERF was ex TML contract lorry & you drove it for a later owner it is now in Malawi

Nice one Tribsa, sorry i forgot but the memory works with a nudge! Brain Bleeds, who’d have em?

Yes you are right, I remember a happy day up to Norfolk following your mighty F12 (which you may still own if your good Lady has a say in it) and I took one or more of my kids? remind me?

I think that model was my favorite ERF, I remember my first on Lamberts. It was very blue inside, had a mighy 290 ■■■■■■■ and a fuller roadranger box with 3rd and 4th back to front which I got hang of by the end of my first week a way in it doing Kawasaki’s up the north east.

cheers
