Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Fergie47:
Anyone remember this Smith of Maddiston Guy ? It was the only one finished in those colours. Mick Hennessey drove it for a while, untill he and Bobby Knox left to go to Smithers, when they were based at Lex Tillisons. I had the oppertunity to join them, but prefered to stay on general haulage work. I drove it for about a year after Mick left. The thing that sticks in my mind was the short stubby exhaust, which, by the time you reached Penrith on the way to Scotland, you were deaf . Also,no dodgy nights, as it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Hello Fergie47
When dads over next i will show him the pic.Im sure he knew Mick Hennessey.I see what you mean about having a dodgy night out,you cant beat the old tackle.

See Charlie, thats twice youve spent your pension on beer for others…look twice spend once! In August!

Hi Richard.I remember those days so well.Brought a tear to my old eye.Myself and Mappo had a deal with Hampshire Rose Growers for manure ( I nearly said s–t then) Also we had a deal going with a farmer next to The Forge for oats and hay.Sad day when steam came in. No plus on coal :frowning: Happy days.Have you contacted GazIOW re the old boys outing to Alton.Terry Sparrow is starting to mumble.Bad sign Regards Charlie

Does anyone remember a driver, Pete Humphries who drove for Hatton’s ?

He left there and went on to the Continental company from London, that had a depot on the Chandlers Ford Ind Est, they had 4 and 6 wheel Maggie tractor units ( Richard, can you remember them ? was it SCA Freight ? ) He slipped off a ladder stripping a tilt and hurt his back, I worked with him on Smith of Maddiston at Totton for a while, he later became a car salesman at a garage in Winchester. Haven’t heard anything about him since then, and that’s 40 odd years ago.

THIS WAS TAKEN ON WOODSIDE ROAD, LOOK THE RENWICKS YELLOW CREEPING IN

Bonjour Dave,
Hope you are keeping well, yes it was S.C.A. I think Graham Richardson was on there before he went to Eurohaul, and another Graham who went on to Solent Shipping. I cannot remember a guy called Pete Humphries, but then I was only 3 at the time :unamused: :unamused:

Charlie, You could get a plus on coal, the bird in the first garage over Tancerville Bridge, her name was Ann Thracite, Gaz IOW (still missing from under the pier in Sandown) always stopped there and came away with Nutty Slack , I think that’s what he said !
Regards to all
Richard

Hi Richard.I remember Gaz IOW saying something about slack nuts, but I thought he was talking about his wheels :unamused: Re the second Graham who was on Solent Shipping,I have a photo of him and his wife taken at Beaune Transports .That was the old place up in the town before they built the new one close to the autoroute. When I can get my eight year old great grandaughter to sort things out I will put them up.Regards Charlie

Still alive and kicking Richard, and you ?
Graham Richardson, there’s a name from the past. As an apprentice in the workshops at Hill of Botley ( along side the ageing Monty Theobauld ) if ever there was a chance to go as mate on the heavy haulage I’d take it. One of the first trips was with Bill Miles, and Graham as mate, and me as “second mate” with the Thorneycroft Antar, and a sodden great low-loader, to collect a Tank from Swansea Docks and deliver it to REME at Andover. We broke down every other day, and with no motorways, it was all on “A” and “B” roads, took a week. Fully freighted she’d do 1 mile to the gallon, or less, and the oil consumption was just as bad.!! ( Rover V8 Meteor diesel engine ) When Graham was 21 he got to be a driver at Hills, but my memory fades as to what motors he drove then.
I saw him from time to time over the years ( as you do ) then caught up with him again when he was an O/D and bought the red Iveco 480 ( ex-show motor ? chrome stacks and bumper, and plenty of bling) from Pitters. Some tool that, in it’s day. I took it to the test station at Salisbury one time with a tri-axle test trailer, Jesus, did that thing pull ! didn’t know it was on the back, till you tried to stop the sucker. Do you know what happened to that Motor ? I haven’t seen or heard about Graham for sometime, is he still around do you know ?

Hi Dave,
I have just re read my post and realise I meant Graham Richardson went to Solent Shipping, and the other Graham, Graham Wainwright went to Eurohaul, and yes I remember the Iveco I think it was a limited edition which came from the factory as you say all blinged up.
I haven’t seen either of the Graham’s for some time I think one of Gazzer’s friends is in touch with Graham Wainwright.
Here’s a pic of one of my Iveco’s a 190.48 which GAZIOW drove, you never had to worry about the slop in the tank, she just kept pulling, once he could get it past Valerie’s lay-by
You may recognise the trailer :unamused: :unamused:

Regards Richard
